Benzo withdrawal...anyone have experience?

20 years ago 0 201 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I took .5mgs last night and will take .25 mid morning. The symptoms are subsiding gradually. Hopefully in a month or two I will be off them. I go to the doc today, I am going to ask her about Klonopin. I have read that it is used as a "transition" drug to help people stop the xanax. Because of its longer 1/2 life it is easier to stop taking Klonopin so it is used as a transition med. Mike

Thanks Mike for the reply. I'm sure that it is withdrawl symptoms. I only take Xanax as needed but I take Zoloft daily & I tried coming off too fast & had pretty bad withdrawl symptoms a few months ago. I went back on Zoloft & next time I taper I will do it slowly under my Dr.'s care. When you are really anxious does it get better when you take Xanax? I always put mine under my tongue (during an attack) & it works almost instantly. Anyway I hope you feel better soon. Chanda

Thanks Trish, I think I may have cut my doseage too quickly. I had quit cold turkey about a week ago (not a good thing to do as I discovered) then the symptoms began. I thought it was just added anxiety from being on vacation, I even started a "vacation anxiety" thread. Then I started to read about benzo withdrawal. I began taking 1/2 my usual dose again yesterday (or the day before). I have read exactly what you said (after I stopped cold turkey) in several places. thats why I started taking it again. I suppose I need to bump up to 3/4 my usual dose for a few weeks before I try the 1/2 dose. CDG, Increased anxiety, insomnia, jitters, lethargy and bowel distress. All appear to be symptoms of withdrawal. In a way I really hope it is withdrawal, I could rationalize that easier than a relapse. Mike

Hey Mike what are the symptoms you are experiencing??

I personally haven't tapered as yet, but from what I have read from others and a doctors advice is to go very gradual. Example if your dosage is 1mg total a day, taper to .75 and stay there for at least minimum 3 weeks, if no more anxiety is present, then reduce to .50 for another 3 weeks, etc. More relapses occur from too fast too quick to reduce the dosage. Less occurance of relapses or withdrawal if done over period of time. Hey we have lived with it this long, just knowing your going med free, the wait would be worth it.

Is it as bad as I read? I have reduced my Xanax and am beginning to wonder if the symptoms I am experiencing are not due to withdrawal rather than a relapse. I cut the dose in half about a week ago. Any wisdom? Mike
