Something To Ponder

Part of his statment is applicable to me .I'm a risk taker and prefered socialy taboo substance's rather than a low risk life style when I was younger. But thats were the comparison ends. What I had'nt counted on was the loss of control and my ability to stop smoking which is typical of addiction. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 104 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,872 Amount Saved: $1,040.00 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 21 Mins: 8 Seconds: 42

I agree with Butterfly Swimmer completely. You make a choice when you first start. Many of us did this at a very early age. After you are addicted it is not so much a choice anymore. You have to make the choice to quit which is a very hard thing to do since you are so comfortable in your addiction.. That quote sounds like the blame is completely on the smoker and I believe some of the blame should be with the tobacco companies for making them so addicting and other variables in our lives that make us ignore the dangers. You get me every time Bear! I have always had MAJOR issues with Thomas Szasz - so the mention of him and/or his statements really get me going. Yuck Yuck Yuck. Anyway - this is a good gateway discussion - we can always count on the Bear to get things rolling! Bear - hope you & Frip are both doing well and staying healthy! I'm heading off for a mini vacation tomorrow. Just didn't want you to think that my absence over the next week means I'm angry or any other bad thing! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/24/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 128 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,480 Amount Saved: $832.00 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 16 Mins: 50 Seconds: 58

Bear, I'm sure you'll receive many interesting responses to this statement. Let's keep in mind that everyone' opinion will vary and as always we ask that you take what you need and leave the rest. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Ah Changing The thing I have to resort too to get your attention.Dr Thomas Szasz is a phychiatrist. He also said "When a person can no longer laugh at himself it is time for others to laugh at him." :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 104 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,872 Amount Saved: $1,040.00 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 20 Mins: 51 Seconds: 19

I have to agree to a point. Yes, we CHOSE to start smoking when, at least for most of us, we were very young. However, after that initial choice that was made when we were foolish children, it no longer becomes an active choice... it becomes passive - it's just something we did because it was normal. Have you ever been driving down a road that you commonly take to a specific destination, except this time, you're going someplace else, and you turn or get off the highway at your normal exit out of habit? You didn't CHOOSE to get off there really... it was just out of habit. Once we were addicted, it was just normal for us to smoke. And we wanted to keep that normality that nicotine gave us because otherwise, our lives would be barely functional for a while afterwards. We finally make an active choice again when we quit smoking. Does that make any sense? Crave the Quit! I wouldn't say it's wrong but I don't think it's as simple as that for most of us. Certainly, it's a choice to begin to use whatever it is you end up addicted to but I think the addiction itself is more complicated. We have had a lot of discussion here about the emotional aspects of addiction and how many of us allowed the junkie to deal with difficult or uncomfortable situations rather than learn how to handle those things without a crutch. I think that is the root of addiction, not the fact that we "choose" it over a healthier lifestyle but that it "chooses" us in weak or uncertain times. We, here, are choosing life free of nicotine addiction although at one time I suppose you could say we chose the addiction over a healthy life. Maybe that's what this guy (who is he anyway) was saying? If I wrote my exact thoughts about this - I know I'd get censored! So, the toned-down/edited version...Thomas Szasz is a troubled man who knows nothing about what he's saying. Addiction is still so stigmatized, and the last thing we as a society need is reinforcement of this stigma. I full-heartedly believe that addiction is an illness. There is scientific proof of this. Yikes Bear - you've got me all riled up now!
