Cold Turkey vs NRT

Try, How much gum do you use a day? Without the nicotine gum program I would not have made it. The gum did it's job well for me. Our quits are close together and we used the same NRT....so lets help eachother. I think being on the gum is causing you lots of problems. I now know it was my problem. We're teasing your systems with the nicotine. Our body is yelling at us that it remembers a day when it got all it wanted. It hasn't forgotten it's addiction yet. Some of this gum thing is a false crutch. I was using a stupid half piece in the morning and a half piece in the evening. I quit the gum yesterday and I haven't missed it AT ALL.NOT ONE LITTLE BIT. I guess two tiny half pieces was a joke. I was already weaned off the NRT but mentally wasn't. What I feel now is great. I feel that freedom everyone talks about. I'm sure if I continued to play with that gum I would eventually set myself up for disaster. I'm not sure if less than 1mg of nicotine I was getting would do that. That little half piece got chewed and I probably digested the nicotine anyway. You got to try and get off that gum!! Don't ruin your quit and go cold turkey off it. But take half pieces of the 2mg. If the morning...dinner and evening is the hardest use a half piece each time. Keep cutting back till you just end it. Everyone does it differently.....so make how you do it your own plan. Let me know how you do. I don't think we can say brands of products....but there is a gum that starts with an O......and it works...GREAT!!! I used it yesterday and I don't even want it today. Try....it's all mental....totally mental right now. Your battle has become the power of your brain against the enemy. CT is probably better. I used gum and I'm still on it. My husband quit CT and even though he's had a cig once or twice he's free of the cravings. Right now, I'm 8 days shy of 6 months and the cravings have been absolutely fierce the last couple of days. Last time I quit, which was for 3 years, I quit CT and it was so horrible, if I had to go through that again, I would not do it. I couldn't agree more - A quit is a quit. Using the patch according to directions helped me to succeed in my quit. Surprisingly, it wasn't really the recommended method as I was more psychologically addicted than physically addicted (Maybe that made it easier to stop the patches too...who knows) I had some dangerous thoughts about buying some of those herbal cigarettes (just for those social moments when I am outside having a drink with friends) Yikes! I believe this would be a sure way to fuel that psychological addiction all over again. Summer is my last season...and I need to learn how to do it smoke-free just like all the other seasons. (Mind you...it is sooooooo much easier when the smokers are outside being miserable in the snow and wind rather than outside standing beside me) Congrats on your success...You are a non-smoker (Nrts or not) Windy My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 298 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,960 Amount Saved: $1,490.00 Life Gained: Days: 29 Hrs: 2 Mins: 32 Seconds: 27

hmmm I also went for the most part CT and feel that this does have a higher (very much so) success rate than other programs. However, Quitting is Quit. If you stop smoking you have stopped your addiction. Now, that being said, as you work through the program of the NRT you have to be honest with yourself so that you can truly stop smoking and not rely upon another nicotine delivery device. I have some friends who are still using NRT's and gum who have quit for over two years! They have stopped smoking but still feel the addiction and the misery of not having nicotine in their system. For me - I would want to avoid that. For me - and that is how the decision should be for all of us. You do what is best for you - whether it is NRT, cold turkey, or being underwater for protracted periods of time. mitri, Tom, BFS, Sparky, Marie, Sam, Rusty, nonic, straight, Seamus, Ex, Danielle, JDK, thank you all for jumping in on this. I did have a chance to talk to this guy again & I told him that as long as I'm not rolling up the patches & smoking them, I'm just as quit as he is & he can mind his quit & I'll mind mine. Thanks for getting my back, everybody. BFS, I know exectly what you mean & I have no intention of staying with the patches one day longer than the recommended time. WOOHOO!!! to us! This is such a hot topic. Unhooked you are doing great!!! As a repeater and I do mean repeater, do whatever you have to do. My husband quit over 4 years ago cold turkey and did fine. I used Zyban (twice), patches (several times) another stop smoking aid (three times), cold turkey (twice). Never made it to 50 days. Today I am using Chantix and this site along with a couple others. I stay in contact with a wonderful support group. I can tell you my husband never ever judge me and my relapses. If it were not for his support I don't know what I would have done. Also, and you know what I am talking about, the support here is amazing. Now I am a non-smoker for today. I am using an aid and lots of people and I am SMOKE FREE. Unhooked you are a postive and awesome quitter. My opinion, for what it's worth... I believe that whatever method you choose is right for you. HOWEVER, there is such a thing as quitting without quitting. When I first quit, I worked with a woman who'd quit smoking 5 years earlier. So, when I was preparing to quit, I asked her how she quit. She said she quit using the gum. Then, I asked her how long she used it and she said that she was STILL chewing the gum!!! FIVE YEARS LATER!!! She didn't quit - she substituted one addiction for another! This, in my opinion, is not truly quitting. Use the patch, gum, losenge or whatever for AS LONG AS RECOMMENDED!!! After about a month or two after the recommended time limit, if you're still on it, then you're not doing yourself any good! You're still spending money on an addiction, albeit a less deadly addiction, but an addiction nonetheless. Unhooked, you are still in the recommended time frame, so I don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with what you're doing! MANY people on this site have quit successfully using NRTs, and I'm sure that you will most certainly be one of them! If you're still bothered by what this person said, you can tell him where to go! That should make you feel better about it! :) You're doing an awesome job and I'm sure that when it's time to come off the patches, you will do it with grace and dignity, just like you have with the rest of this quit! Crave the Quit!
