Thinking about ...Thoughts and Words

Yes... the mind is very powerful. It is so powerful that when people REALLY..REALLY ...REALLY get upset over addictions they have been known to stop instantly.....and never even want one again. This is a true story I read a few years back: A man who was a heavy smoker watched his father die from lung cancer. The day his father died...he left the room of the hospital and went outside to smoke while he was grieving.... Knowing the whole time how ironic it was that the very thing that killed his father and caused him such grief he was doing himself. Many, many years passed and he continued to smoke. Always knowing he should quit. He had become a successful businessman and on a trip to Europe he had a suit custom made. It was his favorite suit and it was very expensive. While in New York city he grabed a cab for an important business meeting. It was still in the days you could smoke in the cab. While smoking an ember badly burned his new suit. FURIOUS.. he threw the cigarette out the window and quit smoking without a single crave. You see......something hit home in his head. Health risks didn't do it. Not even his father's death could do it. But his suit......well for some reason that suit hit home and empowered him to quit totally and easily. It is why our personal reasons need to be so important to us. It has to be true...and real. Not what is supose to be a good reason. But what is "our" good reason. His father's death should have been a good reason. It wasn't, but his suit was. Here's my favorite quote. It is from Gotama Buddha and it tells me that no matter how tough things are, there is something to be thankful for. Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful. And then that simple act of saying "I'm thankful" brings us to a higher place. You know Rusty, when I first read this post, I thought "sometimes we NEED to wallow! Sometimes we NEED to be negative!" And then I realized that being negative and wallowing isn't getting me anywhere (by the way, I'm NOT referring to the quit, but life in general). So I'm going to try your way of being positive and changing what I think, do and say in order to bring myself up and see if it works. But I'll tell you, it's a WHOLE lot harder than being negative!!! Crave the Quit! This is a great post! I've thought about what you were thinking when you thought to write this down. I didn't get very far ;) Actually there is a verse that came to mind from the book of Proverbs: "For as he thinks within himself, so he is." Your wisdom runs deep dear Rusty! Thanks for getting us thinking. Thanks Rusty or should we call you Ms PollyAnna :eg: I have been applying those thoughts to this quit and I am a lot nicer to be around. I know my body is healing and I love my smoke free life. The freedom oh, that sweet freedom. I know for sure that it took me 50+ years of smoking to get to my final quit, and it will take some time for all of the old stuff to be gone. So I march on one day at a time. Of course having friends like you help so very much. Thank you my friend ;) Sparky My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 29 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 290 Amount Saved: $87.00 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 22 Mins: 48 Seconds: 42

Splendid post Rusty, thank you! :) Like Rusty said, "give it a try", whether you are 5 days, 5 months or 5 years. And remember, this helps with life, not just quitting smoking! LOL Rusty, Ain't nothing wrong with PollyAnna,( she'd probably never start smoking!) I know you are right! I write down inspirational sayings in my journal, and some days when I feel down, just reading them can lift me up! That tells me that you are totally corredt. The positive (PollyAnna) can change the way we feel! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 85 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,125 Amount Saved: $896.75 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 8 Mins: 58 Seconds: 31
