Feel like I'm losing my best friend !

Yehhhhhhh, the BIG day has finally arrived and I feel great about my decission to quit. Went to the store the other day and stocked up on sunflower seeds, dried fruit and anything I could find to help me through this without the weight gain. I've had a big cup of coffee, read the paper and will probably have the cleanest house around when this week is over. I am a non smoker :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 1 Mins: 14 Seconds: 34

Dee, I know someone who is an alcoholic. She was in a destructive abusive relationship for a long time & she & her boyfriend would drink together & fight & he would beat the crap out of her. She finally left him & joined AA. She phoned her AA sponsor one night & said she was missing her boyfriend & wanted to go back to him. Her sponsor told her that she would go over to my friend's house with a bottle of vodka, get drunk & beat her up if she missed it that much. Nicotine is not your friend, Dee, we're your friends. Nicotine is your abusive ex-boyfriend & he's out of your life. Think about alcoholism. Think about addiction to heroin. Think about junkies who have to have their fix of crack. Their fix is their best friend. Because when they go a little while without a drink or without a hookup, they start going through withdrawals, and only their best friend can get them out. Now think about you. No, this isn't a nasty little habit. This is addiction. You are an addict. A junkie. No different from the others. And your hit off that cigarette eases your withdrawals and then you think it is your best friend. It isn't. It's just a drug wrapped in white paper. Like crack. When that fact finally hits you, and when you want to stop being an addict, and when you will do anything it takes to stop smoking, and then when you stop smoking, you are quit. And you are quit as long as you never light up another one. That's all it takes...don't light the next one or any one after that. You can do this, Dee. You can. Dee, If I can make a wee suggestion. Spend the time between now and your quit looking up everything you can on the internet about cigarettes. yes... we all sort of mourned what we thought was our little buddy......when really it wasn't a buddy after all....it was just a plain old addiction. Get yourselve real pshyc (use phonics on that one) up!!! You have to get excited....a new and exciting journey. A wonderment of what is around the corner. Buy some special stuff in advance. Get some pretty shampoo for your first day quit. Rub some pretty lotion on your skin and smell it off and on all day. Make an appointment for a massage for next week as a celebration for making it one week. Guess what I am trying to say is......plan....really plan. If you do the craves will be MUCH EASIER. Not gone..but you somehow accept them in different light. You'll do just fine. Remember .... come here often. You go girl. Glad to know my feelings are normal. I won't keep any extras around because I've tried that and it didn't work. I'm down to smoking 1/2 of one so I will have enough to last thru tomorrow night. I have 9 left. Can't wait to kick this nasty habit. It will be sooooooo great to say I'm a non smoker :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: -10 Amount Saved: $-2.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: -2341

Dee, As you can see, many of us have felt this very same feeling. My smokes were ALWAYS there for me to get me through everything...good and bad. The day I quit I stil kept a secret stash of 2 cigs hidden in my car...just in case...until I threw them out at about 3 weeks. I don't recommend it, but it was empowering to shred them and let the tobacco fly out the window and to put an empty piece of paper into the ashtray (and not have to worry about it catching fire!) The ashtray left my car shortly thereafter. Remember what you are feeling now. In a few weeks, when another new quitter has exactly the same feeling, you will be able to offer your wisdom as to how you worked through it. And you will work through it; I promise. We'll help. Martha My reasons for quitting are: Scared what they are doing to me health wise, want to be able to go somewhere not smelling like smoke, quit spending the money, feel healthier, and mainly just be free from the addiction. No one else in my family smokes and that really makes me feel pretty guilty.(and stupid) I know the feelings I'm having will get better and I'm going for it! Thanks, Carylene, Martha and Lainey for the support.
