Will Nothing Work?

20 years ago 0 42 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I was on Ativan at the beginning dose. Now the doctor has added Zoloft and a stronger sleeping pill. Now in calmer light I think the Ativan was working as hard as it could, I had just overwhelmed it. I wish there was some one to talk to in the middle of the night. I just can not shut my brain off when it runs away and things keep getting worse. If there were just some one to talk to. My life is totally destablized right now and I do not know how I am going to handle that and this. I hate to wake my wife, she needs her sleep too. She has to work also. Thank you for your help. As I said, I just wish there was some one to talk to in the middle of night.

I can certainly sympathise with those eternal nights. Have them myself from time to time and for a long time I had them every night. It really bites. But there is hope. It doesn't have to get worse. I agree with PEACE that lack of sleep can only increase the problem. It's a catch 22 you get more anxious because you can't sleep and sleep eludes you more frequently because you are more anxious ! But, from experience, I know there are lots of things you can at least try on that front. I don't know much about the herbal remedies except that I am really soothed by a cup of camomille (sp?) tea at night especially the this one I found with ginger in it. On another thread on this web site, after finding the ginger/cam. mix helped, I read that ginger root can have a calming effect ...well, it certainly does for me. Writing in my journal is a huge help at times. I just write how my day went and how I am feeling sometimes I go on and on for pages. I fnd that just writing how I feel down calms me enough to get it all under control. I also find that just talking to my companion for hours while we play scrabble helps. It is slower than I would like but eventually I can go to sleep or go on with the day. Exercise can often help but for me it only helps if I am listening to music as well. If I run without it my mind still wanders too much. For me Ativan works super well when I am too far gone into my anxiety. I guess I am probably not much help ... reading through my reply I can see that some of my solutions seem pretty weak but they do help me so ... I hope maybe one sparks an idea for you that will be helpful. Here's to finding peace, Nina5

Hello CQ, I can sympathize with you. I was a weeks without sleep and thought I was going crazy. A lack of sleep can worsen anxiety and anxiety worses the sleep. The thing is you have to find something to break the vicious cycle. CQ, what meds. did they put you on? I have never heard of meds working for a few days and then just stop working. The symptom of your high heart rate happens often with lack of sleep and fear of the lack of sleep. I hope the doc will find you something that will work. I found out that once I could sleep, I could work on the anxiety with deep breathing and being able to have energy to go out and do things I enjoy. I found out having a clear rested mind, I am able to work on my fears. Just know that things seem to be more magnified on your tired body and mind. Hang in there. There is hope.

Hi CQ, I just wanted to add something in regards to Redface's post. You mentioned the use of Skullcap, Valerian etc to help with sleep. I'm actually studying herbal medicine and homeopathics as part of a career change and just wanted to add that you really need to be EXTREMELY careful when using herbs if you are on orthodox meds. Especially anti-depressants, I would recommend only using herbs under strict supervision from a qualified herbalist if you are also going to take anti-depressants. Combining the two can have very adverse reactions, Skullcap and Valerian are both nervine herbs, excellent for feeding and restoring the nervous system and aiding with depression to, but please be very careful with combining these with any meds, it could end up making you worse instead of better. From what Redface said I can see she knows that herbs can conflict with meds but I just wanted to expand on that. btw - St Johns Wort is any an excellent carmative, I have a cup of it twice a day and it really helps to stop me feeling irritable. Thanks, Tazz :)

This thing ought to have a name, Sunday Night Syndrome, or Monday Morning Mayhems, because it is so common complaint with sufferers, that you make it thru the week fine, then Sunday nights your anxiety is heightened, by Monday morning your in absolute overload. It is heightened hypervigilance with the anxiety, and will magnify, breathing techniques will help. But Mondays were awful for me to go back, I was finally advised to take an extra pill (I was prescribed a benzo)on Monday's as soon as I got out of bed, it helped me to make it to work. Then Tuesday and remainder of week I would be fine on my regular dosage, bam Sunday nights roll around again same thing. Hard to explain to someone who says, well you've had a relaxing weekend, what are you possibly nervous about, I knew it wasn't the office itself, nor anything major, just was panic. Once your medicine starts working it does start the desensitization period, and that takes more than a week. I think that is the stage you are at, relaxed on off period, yet still sensitized to symptoms. TrishE

It worked for a couple days last week and through the weekend. Then Monday with fresh stress it failed utterly. I do not know if it was all in my head, somekind of placebo effect, and this is reality or if this new stress just wiped it out. Whatever happened I am a basket case. My heart is pounding about 200 beats a minute, and you know the rest. I haven't slept all night, now I have to work. I have a long week before my therapy appointment. We were going to work on relaxation exercises. I could sure use something. Thank you for being there. I have an appointment with a psychiatrist (terrible spelling) in two weeks. From the pro's I'd like to know how much worse it can get. Does it go to the point I can not function at all? Any way Trish, thank you for your interest. I'd appreciate any ideas you have.

CQ, What happened within those 3 or 4 days? Did they give you just a few days supply only, or did you feel they just stopped working altogether? Were you off for the weekend perhaps and felt the medicine helped you more at home, able to sleep, but come Monday the stress with work made it flare up again, and you felt the medicine wasnt controlling it? I usually never hear of someone that started a med and it worked great only for a few days, but Im sure its documented somewhere. I have heard of some starting up feeling either worse, or too medicated, but not quit working all together, unless they were tapering or ceasing one med for another. Just curious. Trish

Something will...if it's noise of rain, try earplugs and a pillow over your head...if you like, buy aromatherapy...burn it in your room and rub aromatherapy 5-10 drops of aromatherapy oil mixed with water or oil all over your body and face. Use aromatherapy pillows...hot baths, hot rubs, and if it does not conflict with your meds., Valerian, Skullcap, Passionflower, Hops, Chamomile in a mixture. It worked for me before my meds had enough time to work. It usually takes about 2-4 months for anti-depressants to work, and anti-axiety meds are usually quicker, but build up over time. Hope this helps...The Panic Program will help too, but that takes more time....

I have tried medication. It worked for about 3 or 4 days. I thought I had found an answer. Now I am totally freaked out again. There will be not be any sleep tonight. The train is running hot and heavy, one after another, each just as ugly as the one before. Not only does that make for an incredibly long night, it makes for a really trying day. Being back where I started is so depressing. The hope of relief was so very nice, and the hopelessness of this is so very very ugly. How do you pick up the pieces again?
