Social drinking and not smoking

17 years ago 0 12 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
So, I've been smoke free for 15 days now. It's been a rough road, but I refuse let the cigarette control me any longer. Since I've quit I have not had a sip of alcohol. My husband and I like to go out and have a few drinks with our friends on the weekends. Today is Friday and we have plans to meet our friends at a local bar. Since my quitting day, I have declined our friends invitations b/c I did not want to be tempted to smoke. Although now, I am at the point where I still want to be social. Does anyone have any advise to give to me about this situation????? I have to agree with Maria here. I enjoy a drink too and the effect of alcohol (in moderation - Mrs Ed only allows me a half-full trough) - but it does not turn me into a helpless vomiting teenager. I would NEVER drink and drive, as drinking affects reaction speed. However, I am ALWAYS aware enough to not allow my quit to be threatened. Each to their own, and I'm sure you know yourself better than anybody else does! all the best Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 442 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,270 Amount Saved: 3315 Life Gained: Days: 72 Hrs: 2 Mins: 10 Seconds: 31

Hi there I didn't go anywhere (apart from work) for the first 4 weeks of my quit but have always like a glass (or two!) of wine so after a couple of weeks me and my partner would have a few glasses at home - no cigarettes around so no temptation. Then we ventured to the pub and sat in the non-smoking area and managed to survive that. For the past couple of Fridays we have been to our local, sat with the smokers, had a few drinks and NOT smoked (and not missed it either!) You have to do what works for you and I found taking it step by step helped. The only problem is now we moan about how much our clothes and hair stinks the next day - yuk, enough to strengthen my resolve even more! Can't wait for the smoking ban (in England on 1st July)then all pubs/restaurants will be smoke free! Well done all on your quits! Glad it worked for you Toxinfree, As Lookingglass said, it is just a matter of being aware! We were out Friday night also, and I have been very careful to keep the drinks to a miminal and it is quite manageable. But I could also see how quickly tht could get out of hand...so one of the events we need to proceed cautiously! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 55 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,385 Amount Saved: $580.25 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 16 Mins: 36 Seconds: 17

Cool for yuou toxinfree...but remember you don't have to drink to go out with friends. My band played a great private party that we play every year last night. They host is always great and gives us whatever we want. They had all my favorite beers there! I wanted one BUT I knew it would make not smoking harder. So I abstained. For the next 3-4 or 4 weeks Im basically cutting myself off. Im amazed you were able to drink and not smoke BUT its probably because you had people that care about you with you. MAke sure your with people like that if your gonna drink. Remember, drinking not only makes you want to smoke but impairs your judgement as well. It's so great to hear about your success in socializing and not smoking......it will get easier as you go.....but on the side of caution? always have in the back of your mind an escape plan if the going gets too tough. Have a plan to back out of the situation....some way to get "away" and get back in control. and then with that plan....go and enjoy yourself. there IS life after smoking and it's great! Good job ToxinFree. Now just you wait... the day will come when waking up and having that morning coffee WILL NOT make you think of a cigarette. Really. You'll see! Keep up the good work.
