Not doing that good

Smokey - "Rationing" or "tapering" your cigarettes sounds more torturous than quitting! It gives each cigarette so much meaning, and it makes you go through constant withdrawal, nicotine intake, withdrawal, nicotine intake, etc. I seriously think this cutting down thing, combined with the anticipation of quitting, is making this whole process much harder! Just my perspective! Let's try baby steps. How about you come back on one hour and tell us that you were smoke-free and how you did it. Smokey - Something that has helped me a lot is reality-testing. When I get a craving I feel like I'm going to explode, drown, or just plain die if I don't have a cigarette - and I need it immediately...it's like a panic feeling x 10. So, I tell myself - I can not go another minute without smoking...I'll just die - then I do a reality-check and remember that rationally I know that it IS possible to go another minute without smoking and acutally I am NOT going to die. A craving is just a thought - thoughts don't control us - thinking about something doesn't make it true. So, do some reality testing with yourself next time you feel a craving and see what happens! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Heya Smokey, I'm a firm believer that everyone has to quit when they're ready to quit. I know there's no perfect time but, that person has to make up his or her mind to put them down for good. Then that person needs to prepare for that quit and then learn how to live as a non smoker. To me, it's not as simple as that. It's damn hard work but you have to be willing to do that work. Only you know if you're ready or not. I originally quit smoking on Feb. 14th. One night I couldn't sleep and found three stray cigarettes in my desk drawer. Nope, I didn't know they were there. We have a home based business and since I couldn't sleep, I got up and knocked some work out of the way. I opened one drawer and I saw that partial pack when I picked up my deposit book. I didn't fight the temptation worth a flip and I was 4 days into my quit. I was only going to smoke one but I smoked all three cigarettes in no time. I reset my meter and quit again on Feb. 18th, it was even harder going through those first three days. My point is, you can't stop with just one or two and then you have to go through that pure hell of withdrawing and craving like a mad man all over again. So, I believe you have to get to that point, make up your mind, and then dive into that quit, determined not to ever smoke again in your life. You're not foolish. You're addicted to nicotine. Smokey, while you're getting to that point where you're hell bent and determined to quit, prepare yourself. Okay? That workbook over to the left hand side of this page, it really does help you a lot. Really work that book, okay? Then look at my other post and get ready to have those things on hand when you do quit. You CAN do this, Tutti My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,276 Amount Saved: $179.5 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 8 Mins: 36 Seconds: 0

Yes, smokey, that is foolish thinking. You are an addict, and you've shown that you can't have one or two a day. On another site, they say if you're going to smoke one, just put the whole pack in your mouth and light it, because that's what you're doing anyway. Just like an alcoholic, you can't have one. Period. Stop buying, stop bumming. It's a simple as that. That's what it takes, smokey. No feeling sorry for yourself, no questioning why. Just facing the music, being an adult, staying on it. Do you need the gum or the patch? Then do that. Make a commitment, do the workbook, work the program. It's the only way. Thanks Tutti,I am so determined to quit ,but I am having a terrible time with stickin to it.At work ,I get bored and relied on those cigs for get away time.I know ,I dont want to smoke, just having a difficult time making myself do it.I sometimes think ,I could smoke a cig in the morning and one in the evening and be content this way the rest of my life.Is this foolish thinking,or what ?

Hi Smokey, This thing is NOT bigger than you are. You CAN do this and I really admire you for jumping in there again. When you're tempted to smoke, come here first, okay? Come here and tell us how you're feeling and we'll help you through the cravings. I woke up this morning feeling just fine. I no sooner posted that I was doing good today on the February Quitters thread when all of a sudden, here came a huge craving. It's going to happen...no two ways about that. But, they do get easier and they do get fewer and further between. Meanwhile, we have to use our tools to get through them. Drink A LOT of water; have your hard candy, sunflower seeds, roasted peanuts in the shell, gum, a toothpick, etc. for that hand to mouth thing; get up and move around when a craving hits you or if you start to think about smoking; avoid those triggers that you associate with smoking here at the beginning of your quit; come here and post a lot and read a lot. VENT before you smoke. We're here for you and I know you can do this. Think about what you were doing when you felt the desire to smoke. Then, don't do that again. ;) HA HA HA Stay Strong, Tutti My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,273 Amount Saved: $179.5 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 8 Mins: 26 Seconds: 1
