Dealing with Tension and Anxiety How?

Try, I feel so sorry for you but at the same time, I know you can do this. The anxiety that you've described is horrible. I've been there and done that and I WAS SMOKING AT THE TIME. I did see my doctor and am able to take anti-anxiety medication. As many meds as there are now, there should be one that you can take. They are expensive but, you can get those samples from your doctor. Look, if you light up and your breathing gets bad, your coughing gets bad, and it will, you'll start having anxiety attacks from NOT BEING ABLE TO BREATH. I can't think of anything more frightening than that. When I quit, my anxiety attacks came back really bad but they did level out. It took some time but they did. I didn't think I would be able to hang on either but I got pissed off at the anxiety attacks. I literally chewed them out each time they came just like I do when a craving hits me. It works. You're releasing all of that tension you have built up and, you're putting yourself in control instead of letting yourself get battered down. Will you give that a try? Meanwhile, keep posting and venting until these anxiety attacks leave you alone. The more you talk about them, the better you'll feel. I think you know that already. Hang In There, Okay? Keep doing those slow breathing exercises and drink tons of water for those cravings. I know everyone has to get so tired of me raving about water but it really does help so much. You have to be willing to hang on for just as long as it takes... no matter how bad it is, no matter how long it is. And the ironly is that, if you're willing to do that... truly and honestly willing... it won't be so bad and it won't be nearly as long. But if that's not your attitude, if you're thinking, "I'll hang on until I can't handle it anymore"... chances are that you'll reach a point where you can't handle it anymore, and you'll smoke. And the whole thing will be ever so much more painful than it would have been... if you just closed the door on smoking, for good... no matter what. It's the quitters who really don't wanna deal with the pain... who go through the worst pain. All of this is coming from you, and you have control over it. Don't victimize yourself anymore. Claim the life you deserve, and live it. If some of it seems uncomfortable, so be it. It's going to take some time, but it will happen. And in the meantime, accentuate those aspects of your life that you feel most comfortable with. I'm rootin for you, Tryagain! You deserve something better. tryagain - If you have spent any time at all on this site, and from the number of posts that I see from you, you have been here for awhile, and you have read many many times that each quit is as different as we are. If antidepressants, or a drug in that family, make you feel like committing suicide, what about talking to a therapist... I'm going to be completely honest with you, and let you know that some of us have the most difficult time in the world, a literal walk through a hell. On the other hand, there are many of us who have less difficulty, but it's still one of the hardest things we've ever had to do, if not the hardest thing many of us have ever done. So this is the time to find some coping skills. And if medication or therapy is something that would be an option, keep looking, and don't give up. If you want to find an excuse to smoke, my friend, you will! And if you want to find an excuse about why nothing is working or helping you, that will be easy enough to do as well. On the other hand, if your desire to quit is stronger than your desire to smoke, and if your mind is open to finding the help and support that you need, you will hold onto your quit no matter what. And smoking will not be an option, period... This journey is about choice, my friend. Spend as much time as possible on this site, reading, reading, and reading. As different as we all are, there are some things we have in common on his journey. Each of us needs to learn new coping skills, we need to learn how to deal with life with no smoke screen, and we need to learn how to take care of ourselves on a level we have never known... in order for all of this to happen, we must have a willingness to make it happen. Tryagain, You may not be able to afford seeing your doctor all the time so go to the next best source: your pharmacist. Use this ressource to your advantage. If you can't get down there in person, you may be able to obtain your consult by phone. They will able to recommend a pain reliever either or oral or topical that won't thin your blood as aspirin does. You can also talk to them about your NRT. If the gum is not for you, you have a few options available such as a low dose patch, the lozenge or the inhaler. Hang in there! There are better days ahead. Try, The craves can probably become psychosomatic if you are not careful. They can become the guest who wouldn't leave...the more we think about how we can get them to go the more they stay. Feed positive messages from mind to body as much as possible, "accentuate the positive" if you will. Do as many little things as you possibly can for yourself that you believe will make your body say thank you. Keeping up with your general health is so important. If you don't take care of yourself your body will feel run down and may lead to cravings. Remember it took time to build this habit we're trying quit; it will take time and serious effort to break it. Stay strong and keep fighting. Tryagain - It sounds like you're feeling a smidgen better...I hope that's true. There actually are rehabs that treat people for smoking...problem is that you have to have $ because insurance typically won't pay for it! I cannot keep running to the doctor. I simply cannot afford it. I cannot go to the country or a neighborhood clinic becuase I would literally be there for DAYS waiting to see someone. Years ago I took my Dad to a county hospital with gangrene in his leg and the flesh literally falling off. We waited 36 HOURS to see someone. They are monumentally crowded. In many cases sick people are waiting outside. I have to muddle through this somehow. Not to mention that prescriptions aren't just given away, aside from the samples that doctors hand out. I've tried a few of them that way. Yes there are problems contributing to this. Serious problems. I'd take a bath if I had a bathtub, or a bathroom with a bathtub. I go to the gym and shower. I've tried exercising. That does help, but not after a 14 hour day. I can't hold a weight. This is what does me in just about every time. This time it is serious and I simply MUST quit smoking. I just have to. I have no choice. I can hang on but for how much longer is this going to go on? I've had some really great days! Really superb days. I know they are out there I just have to find them. I think for now, I'm going to stop tapering off the gum. I'm only going to fight one battle at a time. Right now, battle of the death in the family and fallout from that. Without cigarettes. Battle of pain without aspirin. Just stopping the aspirin will take care of the nosebleeds. I know as the cravings and withdrawals subside that tension goes away because on the days they had minimized, I didn't have that tension so I only have to wait it out and maintain while I do. I feel better already. This is really a tough battle. They need a Betty Ford for Smoking.

try, Is anything triggering this? How long have you had this? Always check with your doctor to rule out anything medical. Try talking to your doctor about exercise and eating. Changing your diet and exercising can make a difference. Continue to do relaxation techniques and breathing before bed. Hang on TryAgain. You can get through this. BUT remember you did recently have a slip, so in a way you've been going through a modified hell week again. Maybe realizing that will help keep you strong enough to keep going till it gets easier again. I'm not chastising, mind you, because I've been there, done that. (Which is why I'm only on day 5 now. But sometimes understanding what might be causing the extra discomfort helps you get past it. Also - try to ease up on the medications. They might be backfiring and causing you more anxiety. Try to pamper yourself a bit today if you can. Take a warm bath, sit outside and read a book if the weather is nice where you are, get yourself a fruit smoothie or iced coffee or whatever drink you like. Or even take a nap if you can. Rest helps! Tryagain, I'll echo what has already been said and recommend that you call your doctor right away. You do not need to be suffering from so much anxiety! Can you try a different class of anti-anxiety meds? If not, what about an anti-depressant (many also treat anxiety) - there are also many classes of these? If not, some people take mood-stabilizers (e.g. Neurontim) or neuroleptics (e.g. Risperdal) for anxiety? I'm not trying to play doctor/give medical advise - just wanted to mention some options that you might want to ask your doctor about. Or, what about some alternative medicine like acupuncture? Or, what about getting a massage - that could be a 2-for (symptom reliever & reward all in one!)? Or, what about exercise - even going for a walk can really help to reduce anxiety & muscle tension? I have had my share of anxiety & panic attacks. I know how horrible and desperate it makes you feel. Then, having cravings mixed in is a horrible recipe! So, I can imagine what you're going through. But remember, you said [i]it did get better for quite a few days and I've had some GREAT days,[/i] - how do you know if tomorrow is going to be one of those Great Days...it's worth hanging in there and seeing! There's no reason why it shouldn't be!
