Did you Litter Cigarettes?

Mercy: This is a great question and one that's always been important to me. I (thought) I loved smoking (35 years' worth), but I was a real stickler about not throwing them on the ground or out the car window. Even as a smoker, I found the sight and smell of cigarette butts disgusting and would never let more than 2 "pile" up in an ashtray. I shamed friends who smoked when they would litter. As a golfer, I never dropped a butt anywhere but in the trash can -- there's one on every hole -- so no excuse not to "field strip" it, put it in your pocket, then throw it out at the next hole. Fairways and greens littered with cigarette butts drove me crazy -- now as a nonsmoker, it's really bad! I hope I don't hurt anybody in this upcoming golf season-- but I may have to! lol Keep the faith My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 186 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,475 Amount Saved: $1488 Life Gained: Days: 24 Hrs: 10 Mins: 33 Seconds: 53

I'm very ashamed to admit that I did throw butts out the window. Didn't want to use the ash tray. Mercy, what TX city do you live in? I'm in La Porte. Mercy, What an odd habit. As pretty much a clean nut, I only smoked outside of my home and never littered there. But I didn't want to use the ashtray in my car because I didn't want the smell (huh?) so I threw them out the window. One time I got a warning letter from the DMV because someone driving behind me saw me litter and got my license plate and complained! How embarrassing, and one of the last straws  Audrey My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 86 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,737 Amount Saved: $240.8 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 10 Mins: 49 Seconds: 14

Cigarette Litter "Each year more than 1 billion pieces of litter will accumulate on Texas highways. Of those, 13 percent are cigarette butts. That means 130 million butts will be tossed out in Texas alone this year." --Texas Department of Transportation It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year. That's billions of cigarettes flicked, one at a time, on our sidewalks, beaches, nature trails, gardens, and other public places every single day. In fact, cigarettes are the most littered item in America and the world. Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow, NOT COTTON, and they can take decades to degrade. Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment, and littered butts cause numerous fires every year, some of them fatal. What kind of smoker were you? I was a pretty neat smoker. I used a tunafish can on the back patio. When it was filled up I tied it in a used plastic grocery bag. I was known to throw butts out the window! Mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 81 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,637 Amount Saved: $362.07 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 14 Mins: 44 Seconds: 7
