4 1/2 days to go

17 years ago 0 7 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Kevin, I have been smoke-free for 4 weeks and 11 hours and I was thinking where has the time gone? I,too, read for awhile before I posted - until yesterday in fact. I know I could never do this alone. I smoked for 38 years mostly 3 packs a day. I too have used every method in the book to quit. I had 3 months twice and 4 days once. I HAVE crawled into a trash dumpster to get out my cigarettes and ashtrays. That was the morning after hypnosis, sigh. This time I ended up in critical care telemetry with my breathing shut down completely. This time those four days I listened to people cough their guts out, and one in the room next to mine die. From smoking. And I thought I was so tough and smoking wouln't dare get me. Even survived cancer in 1999! But nicotine is more addictive than anything else on Earth. So hold on, the ride is terrific and terrible at the same time some days, smile. Blessings, Joyce

Hi Kev, I was wondering how you were doing over the weekend. Glad to see that you are on your first official day and seemingly in good spirit! You have reminded me of my first month of quitting and how everything is a challenge and a potential moment of success. It's scary and exhilarating - and SO worth it. Be sure to celebrate all the little triumphs like the first day done, getting through a really tough trigger, really tasting something again for the first time in [blank] years. All the things that mean something to you. So here is a thread called Hi Folks! that was a life saver for me during a tough weekend in the early days. It's ridiculously long but reads like a novel or a soap opera. I don't know if I'd find it as riveting now but it holds a special place in my heart. I put it here because I've bumped it so many times and I don't think its appeal is universal. Anyway, on the off chance you'll enjoy it - I'll offer it for your perusal. Chin up, you are doing great! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 978 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 19,571 Amount Saved: $4401 Life Gained: Days: 75 Hrs: 10 Mins: 59 Seconds: 16

Well I am still stuck at work at the moment, so I saw the advice angelcapp. Walks round the garden it is then, avoiding divebombing pigeons of course :D Since freemom started the music lyrics thread, I just can't get 'breakin' free' from High School Musical outta my head. I guess it is only slightly better than having 'deeply dippy' by Right Said Fred in my head. But as all is occupying my mind at the moment it's all good. Heck I wouldn't even mind 'Bob the builder, can we fix it yes we can' at this present point in time. :D :D :D Btw, congrats on 40 days non-smoking. Before you know it it'll be 400 days!!!! Really, JDK you can do this! I am new in my quit and I found you should not think you are starving for a cigarrette. You are breathing fresh air, and your body is going to de-toxify itself from all of the chemicals you have been putting into your body. You can do this! You are doing this! Don't think of moments of going without, think about years of life you have without those things hurting you anymore!!!

JDK You are doing great! Just remember that when a crave comes (especially after meals) try and distract yourself, go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie, something that is different from you normally do after your meal. We are all glad to have you on here. You can do this!!! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,011 Amount Saved: $200 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 6 Mins: 54 Seconds: 49

Well I made it through the end of the working day without bugging anyone for any cigarettes. Now to tackle the evening meal and the rest of the evening. Its minute by minute stuff. Posting completely takes my mind off smoking. Too much concentration going into making sure the spelling police don't come knocking on my door :D Hope you all have a good night and keep the posts coming. You may not have guessed that I enjoy the interaction here tremendously. I've been on SSC IM all day and so far the only person I have seen is Phil, I am guessing that feature may not be used much. :) I'll keep on it as much as possible too. Don't be afraid to say hi. I honestly don't bite. I leave that to the goldfish :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/11/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Hi freemom, resting is something I am planning on doing a lot of. For the first week at least. The second week could be fun when the pager goes off. :) The positivity is a real bonus with this site, and the added incentive I need. Consider it like being the 12 man in an English football game (I have no idea how many there are in American Football). Hence I am staying real close to this site. Pressing refresh a lot and seeing who's new and how the non-newbies coped throughout the first week. The sunshine helps a great deal too. One thing is for sure, I am glad I didn't dip back into the bin and 'rescue' the nearly full packet of smokes. I am back to positive attitude at the moment. I'll check out that thread you listed. I think I keep an eye on that one regularly. I notice there is a good use of bumping from the old members that spring into life important threads. :) Keep going freemom, we'll get through it together. I will be happy as a sandboy when I get to your quit day count! Hi Kevin. Welcome to the SSC. You can already see how supportive people are here. It sounds like you have done your homework, with your mantras and things to think about. Check out LadyCigeVictor's post about handling cravings with a twist for some more good ideas. You can do this. (I'm not as new as I look - I had a month under my belt then blew it for various reasons and now I'm back and doing better than ever!) Post and read as often as you need to! Oh, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to rest and nurture yourself - many people find the first week or two that they are extra tired. It's a result of the variouses changes going on as your body recovers and detoxes. - Freemom My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 149 Amount Saved: $48.96 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 3 Mins: 34 Seconds: 39

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Well I am a couple of hours into my quit now. Trying to keep the posting to a minumum and reading the other threads here. I forgot how quickly the withdrawal/cravings kicked in. Memory of a goldfish me. :) Mike, best of luck when you start your quit tomorrow. I'm not sure if we're on different timeframes or not. I will be on SSC IM all day as I am today, so feel free to ping me if you see me online. Counting each hour as I go. Kind Regards Kevin My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/11/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

CallMeMomMom, payback already happened, this weekend. Hence I had to change my quit counter. Although, same as Rachael, I was not angry at the person offering me the cigarettes, only at myself for being weakwilled. I promised myself never to do that to anyone again and to go the absolute opposite way. Its a strange thing that you think you were helping someone out by attempting to end their torture, when your not, you're only prolonging it. I of course had to find out the hard way too. Its one case where my generosity was not a good idea. I am focusing on the positive aspects of quitting. It is always in my mind. I also copy and paste everything that looks like helpful info/stories. The 'nicotine is Godzilla' is a very good one and I am reading that a lot. I will apologise properly to Rachael next time I see her. Hopefully by then I will be able to give better advice/suggestions on helping her quit, from someone who spends a lot of time socialising to another.
