Smoke-Free or Smoke-Free-Wannabe?

Ki, I stand in the middle as I agree with you, yet understand Mom. In one year I went through 3 trying to quits, 4th one is the quit. Resetting my meter each time after 2-30+day quits was painful to see my meter reset. Each time I failed I did exactly what Mom says someone would. I figured I smoked now might as well set my quit date another month from now. Which I did. Thanks to this site I was able to come back for the final quit. Being on this site for awhile and this subject has come up in the past, it usually comes out close to 50/50. Keep your quit. Ki, I did want to add, that allowing people to reset or not reset DOES make this site a more 'positive place' and that is a good thing! As Danielle notes, it is up to you, it is the indiviual quit, so it is all about choice! Good topic, it is a hard one to discuss, but thats what we're here for, all the aspects of trying to stay quit! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,664 Amount Saved: $696.3 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 0 Mins: 51 Seconds: 46

Ki, I know what you mean but we can't be here to judge what others do. I have been lucky enough not to be in that situation and hope never to be. I would not want to see someone continue to smoke or drop out because they of a quit meter. The most important thing is that the people here are here for each other. I know that for a fact when I reached out the other night because I thought I would slip and the support kept coming. Would I have slipped without their support I don't know but I do know we all need to be here for each other quit meters or not. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,011 Amount Saved: $325 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 0 Mins: 48 Seconds: 51

Lainey, No, we do not have a policy here at the SSC regarding your quit. It's yours and yours alone. Only you can make it go the distance. We are here to help everyone and anyone who may need us. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

Ki, I totally understand your point. I find those posts very hard to read and try to avoid. I am for resetting the meter, I would feel like I am lying to myself and my quit buddies who are pulling for me. But in a way, I do see the point that all the work you have done is gone with a puff or two...and if you came right back the same day. Its a hard call to make I guess. You will probably get 50/50 answers on it. Some forums apparently boot you when you slip. I don't really know if this site has an actual policy on this? Anyway that's my 2 cents. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,664 Amount Saved: $696.3 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 0 Mins: 49 Seconds: 42

Members, They're are two sides of the coin. We encourage you to continue sharing and expressing your opinions in a respectful way. The moderators of the SSC encourage all those who slip to choose the option that will motivate them the most. For some it's resetting their meter to zero, setting it back a day or leaving it as is. Everyone is different and will therefore choose differently. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Ki, The only thing I can say is that this site is supposed to be motivational. The meter is only one tool in the arsenal. What if a person who slipped and smoked a couple of cigs HAD to reset the meter and lost all motivation. "Well, I had to reset my meter anyway, so I may as well smoke a while until I decide I will quit again." And how long would they smoke before quitting again? It's an honor thing, too, of course, but I would rather see someone slip and get right back on the quit instead of losing their motivation and letting a perfectly good quit go to he**. Even if current smokers are using this site, which many of us did for a week or more before the quit, this site has a way of getting under your skin for many people. It was so much easier to begin the journey knowing how many folks were here to help if I needed it, or to catch me if I fell down and to help me get back up. We are all here to help each other in many ways. If you notice, many people are giving back for the help they have received, and it's not only help to quit smoking. People's lives have been changed by posting on this site! To me, that's way more important than whatever any meter says. But it's only my opinion. I am finding it very difficult to understand postings from individuals who make a public statement that they have slipped and smoked but then choose not to reset their mileage and to continue to flaunt their no-longer-true stats. I feel disillusioned--when I look at your meter in awe because of your fabulous stats, are they real or not? I feel there is something dishonest about smoking (and even confessing it) but not resetting the meter to a new start date. The meter records consecutive smoke-free days. How can a day be smoke-free if one smokes? Regardless of the stresses and issues and truly awful problems that are cited as the excuses for slipping, smoking is a conscious decision on the part of the smoker. No circumstance forces any one of us to smoke. If one chooses to smoke, he or she willingly ends the lovely string of smoke-free days showing on the meter and goes back to start. I feel that the dishonesty of a false meter only increases the potential for future slips. I know we are all very proud of the effort we have made to increase our smoke-free days, but shouldn't we face facts and honestly evaluate our situations--namely, are we really smoke-free for the days showing, or do we just wish we were? If we are so weak that we can't bear to look at a re-set meter, how on earth can we summon the strength to beat this addiction? I am sure this will sound very harsh to some, and I apologize if I have offended you with this viewpoint. My stats are honest and will continue to be, but whether you are showing honest stats or not, I wish you success in your endeavor to not smoke. Thank you for permitting me to express my opinion. :( Karen My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 34 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,378 Amount Saved: $204 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 11 Mins: 58 Seconds: 58
