Super Craves?

16 years ago 0 1543 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Helix, Each bad crave you handle gives you the confidence that you can do the same with the next one. One thing about craves...... : if you dismiss them...they leave. if you dwell on them... the length of the crave lasts as long as you dwell on the thought. YOU HAVE TO END THE THOUGHT. Some people here shout at it in an angry way and tell it to go away. Others minimize it and try to give it little creedence and just say...."I don't do that anymore." Others use the......deterent... which is... do something that gets your mind off of it. Like movies..walks... shopping...whatever. You will make quiting torture if you allow passionate thoughts of you and your butts. Be kind to yourself and learn your own personal technique to get away from craves. mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 111 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,236 Amount Saved: $496.17 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 12 Mins: 1 Seconds: 10

Helix: Has anyone else experienced the same thing? If so, what did you do to get through them? ---------- Yes, I had similar problems in the first 3 months of my quit. I mainly used an NRT inhaler to cope with those "standard" craves. In addition, I used small pieces of NRT lozenge 2 mg (I cut the lozenge into quarters) when the craving became unbearably strong ("super" craves, as you wrote). I don't use the NRT lozenge anymore, but I still keep the NRT inhaler, as my last line of defence, to cope with moments of craving (although I don't often use the inhaler), even after 37 weeks! Cheers, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 260 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,605 Amount Saved: $1300 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 11 Mins: 46 Seconds: 56

Helix - I have had those super-craves in the past and they are rough, indeed. This go-round though I've found that I just don't let myself get sucked in like that. The truth is the more you think about the crave, the more you dwell, the bigger it will grow and the worse it will get. What works for me : Acknowledge the crave and accept the THOUGHT that you want to smoke. Then remind yourself that you no longer smoke and will not put that poison into your body. Then tell that crave to buzz off, get lost, take a hike, etc... And refuse to think about it anymore. Please try it, you have nothing to lose. And let me know if it works for you! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 43 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 527 Amount Saved: $175.44 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 1 Mins: 31 Seconds: 58

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Breaker Breaker laughing. This is a little trick I used to use when I was driving and smoking !! I used to buy a large package of gummy bears and munch down on a handfull of these babys to reduce the amount cigars I was smoking while driving. I was smoking so much my tounge was sore at the end of a day but a handfull of gummy bears would last a least an hour. Now that your not smoking Maybe they,ll get you through those super craves?? ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 51 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 929 Amount Saved: $510 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 4 Mins: 50 Seconds: 17

Hey helix, I can totally relate on that super crave thing... "seems to gather momentum and feels like it consumes my conscious thoughts... This one is quite overwhelming and very hard to deal with as I do not feel in control or able to step back and think about it as a separate entity." Absolutely...this is the part that makes me feel...like a prisoner...like I have to have this...thing at all costs!! I drive a truck...and..i had a couple of partial packs of cigarettes that I kept up in my truck behind my CB for when i might run out of my good smokes...the.."just in case" packs...I still get that little ting when i'm driving...and occassionallly i'll dig through that spot...thinking..maybe i'll find that one cigarette...luckily...they're all gone..and... I"M NOT BUYING ANY MORE CIGARETTES!!! So I guess i'll just have to..get over it!!! Helix, Your NRT is just an aid, you'll still have to work to combat cravings. You've received some great responses from you fellow quitters. One of the best things you can do is distract yourself with a pleasurable activity or some physical activity. Those super craves may be intensified by anxiety. Again, physical activity will help release some of that anxiety. Keep persevering! Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

I've had a few of those Helix..but maybe not quite so severe as what you describe...i liken them to transition stage of labor....get through it..I think..then Wham! it keeps on coming. I breathe....lots....deeply......like a locomotive...walk around......talk out loud about how, even tho I want a cig, I am a nonsmoker, so of course I won't smoke one...call someone....come here and post, hope someone is around....white knuckle it. as you know, it does eventually pass...and each time it does, I remember that the next time it gets hard Good luck -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,002 Amount Saved: $340 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 21 Mins: 20 Seconds: 32

Hello I seem to have to types of craving (despite using NRT): (a)The Standard Crave. It is fairly easy to deal with this one - it does not feel part of me. I have an extra squirt of my nasal spray and wait for it to pass confident in the knowledge that it will. In a masochistic way it is almost enjoyable, strengthening my resolve and belief in the underlying reasons why I do not wish to smoke. (b)The Super Crave. This is a little tougher. It is a strange beast that begins as a normal crave but seems to gather momentum and feels like it consumes my conscious thoughts. It almost progresses to the same panic I used to get when I realised I had run out of cigarettes with no hope of getting any more (eg no where/no money to buy any). The point at which I used to rummage through the dustbin for butts or considered picking one up in the street (yeuch - I know!). This one is quite overwhelming and very hard to deal with as I do not feel in control or able to step back and think about it as a separate entity. Hope that made some sense! The last quit attempt I made (22 days) was finally broken by a Super Crave. I am pleased to say I had another during this attempt, at day 24. It was touch and go but I made it through - not quite sure how. I am sure there will be more to come which I will have to face. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? If so, what did you do to get through them?
