Well said Luna - I'm in complete unison with you. Materialgirl, this is exactly the right time to quit - there is no better time believe me. Just hang in there even if it's for the next five minutes, please don't smoke. This is the bumpy bit in the road but it will get better. Do whatever it takes to not smoke - scream, punch the pillow, eat, run round the block, anything - just don't smoke. I know you aren't happy about this right now but if you get through today you will wake up really proud of yourself tomorrow. You can do it - you are doing it!! All the best and be gentle with yourself. I sobbed my way through the first several weeks. Thought I had lost my sanity. Actually I gained my sanity. It is smoking that is insane. I want to live. The withdrawal is horrid. But the freedom is delicious! Gosh, just look at all this support! At least you know you're in the right place. :) Hmm, let's see, celebrities that have died from tobacco related illnesses: John Candy, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Carson, and the list goes on. They're not invincible. They lie to themselves just like we do. Jennifer Anniston could be diagnosed tomorrow and wouldn't that be an eye opener for a lot of people? You know, materialgirl, I didn't "want" to stop smoking and when those withdrawals kicked in (which is why you're feeling this way), it was worse. We know we need to quit smoking but that "want to" ...well, very simply... not all of us have it. For me, it was more like a "need to". I just woke up one day and decided to give it a shot to see if I could do it. We've lied to ourselves for years while we smoked. We kept telling ourselves things like, "I'm young, I have plenty of time", "She smoked most of her life and she's ok", etc. etc. But in reality, we smokers KNOW we're killing our bodies and that we've become the outcasts of society. I mean c'mon, that little cough is NOT caused by "allergies". These are the lies we tell ourselves as smokers so that we can continue to feed our addictions without facing the truth that we really could be it's next victim. So, since I lied so well to myself as a smoker...I figured, why not lie to myself as an ex-smoker? I told myself a I would return to smoking... when I turned 80. "For today, I will not smoke, but by george, at 80 I'm going to smoke like a blazing freight train". That "forever" thing I had going on in my mind was eased and somewhere along the way (I'm not sure when) I found my "want to" to remain quit. I also learned that what started out as a lie to myself turned out to be a truth. I CAN smoke all I want at 80...I can even smoke all I want to right now... but that desire just isn't there anymore ... (however, the "eating all I want when I turn 80" ... I'm keeping!). When you're 80, you can smoke all you want, but for now, just hang on. Go ahead, work through this and satisfy your curiosity. See what being an ex-smoker is like. It'll take some time and effort...but then again, you have until you're 80 to get a good feel for it. :) Welcome to the SSC! My Milage: My Quit Dat

MG, Welcome and you've made a great decision to quit. What are your reasons for wanting to quit smoking? Your attitude and outlook are going to make a HUGE difference in how your quit journey will go. You have to be convinced that the good will outweigh the bad. You will ALWAYS have the choice to smoke but to stay quit you have to choose not to. The freedom from quitting is incredible but hearing that won't mean a lick until YOU believe you want that freedom. You aren't denying yourself by not smoking, you are actually giving yourself your life back. Dig deep and know that you CAN do this too! Cigarettes Not Smoked

materialgirl, This is indeed your body going through withdrawal. You body is trying to get you to see that smoking is a way of life and you do not have a choice to quit. Think of smoking as the child in you. The adult (you) has made the right choice to quit smoking. We all know that smoking does indeed cause many diseases and deteriorates our health. However, you still have the child in you saying, "ah come on, just one". These thoughts will always creep up on you several days, months and years into your quit. The good thing is that you will be able to take control and the "junkie thoughts" will not longer have control over your quit. It is great that you jumped on our site and are getting the support you need at this time. Quitting smoking is hard and no one should have to do it alone. We all have our good days and our bad days. We hope you will stay close by so that we can get you through the first couple of weeks. Please be sure to also use our free online quit program. Hang in there! Yes, you can do it!
