Why are there so many of us and............

Also remember, just the fact that we are all here trying, says something... Instead of asking "Why can't we cope?" We should be asking "HOW can we cope?" The best way we can, is by first accepting that we have this problem. And yes, to be patient with ourselves. We all want complete comfort NOW, but that's not always possible. We can't demand our mental health, we can only work toward it, by taking risks and taking baby steps. :)

I really appreciate all the ideas and I will try them all until I find the one that works. I still resist the idea that we have to be like this..........But, maybe I will have to accept that, too, over time. Thank you all.

The wash-over thing has helped me. It's kinda hard for me to explain, but I will do my best. When the symptoms of panic start, instead of getting all worked up thinking "Oh, no, here it comes again, what brought this on, what if I have an attack right now, when is it ever going to end, etc.", stop all that and say to yourself, "It's here right now, and I accept it, I will not fight it, or try to figure it out right now, I'm going to feel all the symptoms as they occur". Notice what symptoms you are feeling. Is your heart racing? Then try to make it race even faster! Are you dizzy, then try to be even dizzier! I know this sounds dumb and even scary, too, but it works! Tell your heart to race as hard as it can, tell your head that it can be much more dizzy than it is now. Concentrate hard on making it worse. I know that you just want the scary symptoms to end, not to make them worse. But by taking control in that way, you will see that you do have the power to make them worse, so you must also then have the power to control your thoughts. I hope that I've explained this! If not, feel free to email me and I will send you a link to a site that really explains this technique well. It tells how this problem is overcome by understanding the paradox in all of this. It may be of help to you, or anyone else who is interested. Good luck! lilgoatfarm@yahoo.com

the moment I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle the moment I jumped off of it was the moment I touched down Alanis Morissette I think a lot of our fears subside, when learning how to let go...The difficulty lies in realizing, what it is, we need to let go of. ;)

I've heard other people say to accept the panic and let it wash over you. How exactly do you do that?

I have found that alot of things about panic are total contradictions! It attacks the things that we are most confident in and the things that we love the most. Another paradox is that you can't fight panic, it feeds on that! Your natural response is to fight it, but the best thing to do it accept it and let it wash over you. It also preys upon the parts in our lives where it can do the most damage and scare us the most. Just wanted to let you know that you certainly aren't alone in this!

Thank you, Hopeful. I guess I thought panic & anxiety had to do with theings one feared or dreaded. It's awful to have to avoid things one likes in order to be physically comfortable......It's a contradiction! Thanks again for your encouragement. I'm working on it!

You are right about calling them 'guilt attacks" that's how I categorized them at first. Seemed like everything that I once enjoyed caused me to have attacks, almost like I was punishing myself for trying to have a good time. Like I didn't deserve to be happy any more. It's not so bad now, I've been working hard on this and I have come to realize that God gave me these things that I love and the talents that I have and He wants me to enjoy them. Why would He give them to me so I could feel so bad about using them? It's almost like a slap in God's face when you feel guilt about your blessings, I think. It's like someone gave you a great gift, and instead of enjoying it like they had wanted you to, you push it aside and say that "I don't deserve it". Well maybe we don't deserve it, but we have it and we should use it! You will get past this, I never thought that I would, but I've made great progress in this. Good luck to you!

Why can't we cope? I can't see how I got here?!? I thought I was a perfectly normal person for 50+ years and now I have these attacks while I'm doing things I really love to do! They are like "guilt attacks". LOL I don't want to be medicated!! I don't want to be a victim!! I want to rid myself of this invasion!!
