Do We Really Need To Be Crabby?

17 years ago 0 2838 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
We sure do need this!!!!! Quitting smoking is a hard thing to do. Addiction is no joke. If it were so easy and such a pleasant activity, then there would be no need for a support group...!!! A support group is for those who have a common interest and goals to support each other through the unpleasant task to attain that goal. ie...quitting smoking/quitting drinking/quitting drugs....... If it is an easy and pleasant task to attain that goal, then there would be no need for 'support', now would there? If someone feels the need for 'support', yet maintains that things are just hunky-dory, then there must be some negative subconsious thoughts driving them to this site, correct? Otherwise, they would equivocate quitting smoking with, perhaps, breaking a nail, and keep on going.... POOH! Those folks have trouble accepting the reality and cannot even acknowledge the internal fight with the addiction. Perhaps they were never really a smoker. Perhaps they are still a smoker. Or, more likely, they have always stifled their emotions under weak submission, disguised under a smile on their face and (fake) love in their heart...someone pass that person some K-Y jelly...... :gasp: My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 177 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,854 Amount Saved: $1416 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 18 Mins: 1 Seconds: 24

Rainie - great post. I can totally relate to the gaining of time - I never fully realized how much time & stress I used up smoking. I was constantly thinking about when I'd be able to smoke next, always obsessing about making sure I had enough cigarettes left, etc. And, I hated going out to dinner - as they don't allow smoking in restaurants/bars here. There are so many experiences I wasn't fully present at because I was distracted by my desire/need to smoke. What a waste! It helps to focus on the baggage we've shedded & the amazing things we're gaining by being non-smokers, rather than focusing on the struggle involved. I know that for these past 5 days, I've found myself (many, many times) stuck in the "poor me" perspective. Playing the victim doesn't help! The moral = YIPPY for me - I'm on my 6th day smoke-free! I don't know what it is but I find myself with more patience these days. I was analyzing this thought and I think it is because I have more time in my day. I am not checking the clock to see if I have enough time to run out for a smoke before a meeting or before I do a task at home. I have more time to take care of things that would have caused me stress before. I am also motivated by people comments when they find out I am not smoking. They can't believe I didn't turn into Broom Hilda with my head spinning completely around like someone posessed. I will shout out again, I think it is because of attitude. I don't want anyone thinking that I am just floating through with no problems. But when a problem does start rearing its ugly head I do something about it instead of just wallowing in it. Action = easier crave, a thought is just that... a thought. Penquin, thanks for liking my quote...uuhh hum....thought of it all by myself! I liked what you said about our thoughts being irrational... when I first started this quit I could SO easily talked myself into smoking by paying attention to my irrational thoughts. That is when I started slapping the crapola out of my thoughts...it is a method that I became fond of! Lady- you are so right...smoking never changed a darn thing except the location of my frustration....I was always frustrated outside smoking! Changing- It took me weeks to learn what you have already....
I know that for these past 5 days, I've found myself (many, many times) stuck in the "poor me" perspective. Great post Rainie. I have not experienced the crabbiness of quitting this time. I feel very calm and confident. Anger has left me. It feels good not to have to be angry all the time. Most of my anger was irrational. When I quit, I had to become real with my thoughts. Most of my thoughts were untruths and irrational and I reacting accordingly I suppose. Not anymore. I liked the quote.
