Hello Coach Don, and welcome! You are right when you say you are too young to die, every day on this earth is precious, so keep that at the front of your mind all the time. Every time you crave remember how terrible it would be to hear those words at the doctor's office....either lung cancer, or heart disease, the cravings won't kill you, but smoking will. Your Dad is a dear friend of mine.....if you have half the determination and guts that he had when he quit, then you will make it with no problems. This site helped us both more than we could ever say when we were quitting, I honestly do not think I would have made it without staying close to the people on here. Everyone understands what you are going and will go through....there isn't a problem that you could encounter which someone on here will have dealt with. So post, ask, read, listen and take strength from here. I was the worst, weakest quitter in the world, but I made it this far, so don't just give this a try, be totally determined that this is the time you take the fear of dying away, you free yourself from that dark cloud. If Sunshine and I can do it, so can you. Good luck my friend, you might find it easier than you think, some people sail through it, you might be one of those people. Take one step at a time, little baby steps get you there. I will be thinking of you.....you CAN do it. Love and hugs, Pat. Coach....JohnW is your dad I am hearing??? Oh my, well that means that we gotta get hold of you and see that you succeed at this quitting business. :) First off, there is no givin it a "try"??....The hard core ex-smokers that are here are to serve as certain proof that quitting CAN and IS being done all the time. The main requirement is wanting to stop 'worse' than you want to smoke. The next step is seeing that smoking is an ADDICTION....which means that you don't just have a nasty habit....you are an ADDICT. You need to begin scouting around and reading up on just what that means. That will begin to let you see that you are up against a tough adversary in this battle for freedom. Check out the program workbook....I also think Alan Carr's books are good....there is an article online that you can turn up by doing a search for (the first 72 hours quitting smoking) I don't agree with all this websites thoughts on quitting, but this article sure gives you some insight into nicotine withdrawal. I see you are using the patches...that is the way I went. I was at least a 2 pk a day smoker for lots of years (more than I want to talk about lol) I was on the program for 12 weeks. While it doesn't take away all cravings, it sure takes the edge off them and allows you to begin to build a set of coping skills. Be aware that it takes a few days on the patch to get accustomed to the steady stream of nicotine from the patch vs the up and down levels of nicotine from smoking. The patch may make you feel a bit 'buzzed' of spacey. You may also experience disrupted sleep patterns. It's all normal....it's part of withdrawal..... there are those who believe that stoping smoking and using NRT is just prolonging the withdrawal. I don't agree with that. the patches, gum, etc, are "weaning" tools. and I for one was a chicken when it came to giving up the smokes. I was one of those people who could never manage to cut back. Loosing my smokes was like loosing my arms! Please use this site for support and information. I am sure JohnW would share my email address with you....I am always available to anyone that needs help and encouragement in quitting believe me....it CAN be done....hang tough and kick the demon's butt!! your dad's

WELCOME COACH!!! So youre ready to quit smoking, GOOD for YOU! Keep that thought, make a list of your reasons for quitting and write out your pledge to remain smoke free. There is a lot more to a successful quit than just deciding that its time, you have to work it, you have to believe it, and you have to let go of your addiction and see it for what it really is. When you are emotionally ready to be a non- smoker for life, the process happens a lot easier. I wont kid you, it is not always easy, the first few weeks can be hard, the next few months you may not recognise this person within, by 6 months you may begin to like this new you and by the end of the first year, you should have experienced every daily scenario in life as a non smoker and be able to say, gee that wasnt so bad after all, what took me so long! LOL. Make up an emergency quit kit, carry it always for the fist few months, it should contain some gum, some hard candy or breath mint, an extra patch since you are using the patch, a copy of your pledge, a copy of your reasons for quitting and a list of your coping skills. If you ever face a challenge in your quit, you always turn to your emergency quit kit BEFORE you ever entertain the though of lighting up, it is as easy as that! I too am a friend of your fathers, and I had the privilege to meet him for the first time a few months back, I was surprised to see that after all this time he still carries a part of his quit kit! LOL When he pulled out that straw and put it to his lips I almost died, but it just goes to show that old habits did hard and what ever it takes you do it to remain quit! I wish you all the luck in the work my friend, I am not a regular here anymore but I know there are many wonderful current members that will help you along your newfound journey. This site has grown 10 fold since I was an active member here and that just goes to show how well online peer support can work. I remember when I wanted to quit I was feeling all alone, living in a smoking world surrounded by smokers, then I came here. There were other people, real people that that had smoked for 20, 30, even 40 years that had QUIT! I was in awe, and I vowed that if they could do it I could do it TOO, and I did, and so can you! Stay close, pos

Cravings are a very real issue in an early quit Don, they happen to the best of us, but the secret is you dont act on them!!! The actual thought of smoking only lasts for a few seconds and the longer you are quit the frequency lessens. As you continue to go about your life as a NON-SMOKER you will develop coping strategies and soon learn that you really dont need cigarettes, it is just the junky within trying to lure you back to the life of an addict. Youre stronger than that Don!!!! Chew gum until your jaw hurts, drink bottles and bottles of water, take a shower, or long walk. Exercise, as exercise helps boost your endorphins in a healthy way. Do something new, take up a new hobby or a new sport. How long has it been now Don? Have you got a quit meter going? I dont see you posting your stats. I always found the stats to be a GREAT motivator and as I hit milestones, any milestones in those first few weeks I rewarded myself for a job well done! Think about that new car, boat, vacation you will be able to take with all the money you will not be burning up in smoke!!! WOO HOO! Stay close, post often, read and involve yourself in all the forms as the members of this site really do understand. You can do this Don, weve got your back!!! Movement! Keep yourself occupied and have that chew stick or gum nearby. Start a list of things you want to accomplish and reward yourself when you finish one. Push way that crave and change up your routine if necessary, this may help :) Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
