Stealth triggers!

I agree, what a visual post. My mind is telling me that as soon as I leave here and move on to my day, I'll reward myself with a couple of drags. Someone I'm going to make it through this 24 hours. Great thread. Holy schlamoley did I have a whizz bang weird lunch break today. Here I've been for two days, morning tea - no urge to smoke, dinner - no urge to smoke, hell even the walk to the train was urge free. What completely knocked me for six was the shopping trip! I was after a reward for my quit, and as I walked from work to the department store, I must've looked down every street and thought 'If I go that way, I can finish a smoke before...HEY! NO WAY CHICKEE! YOU QUIT YESTERDAY!' Phew, kicked my own ash, success! ;) So into the store I go and I could smell the perfume counter, the leather handbags, it was AWESOME. I didn't even know that store smelled so good. And then KA-BLAM, every doorway I turned to reminded me of a time that I'd walked through it on other occasions and lit up, or stomped out a smoke seconds before I walked in. I must have thought to light up at least 8, 9 times in a 15 minute stretch. Thing is - I never realized I was smoking all those times, to that extent. Not in the least. As I walked back to work - reward firmly in hand, mind you :) - all I could think was what a big fat saddo I've been these 20 years. Never again I tell you. Anyone else have stories of hidden triggers you weren't even aware of? It was so crazy I'm still a bit horrified! Wow I'm so glad to know it's not just me! Thanks for sharing, hope to hear more stories, this has kept me going all day. What I did do today was walk the same route, to try and get into the new habit of shopping and NOT smoking. I can't explain it and may sound odd, but I'm actually enjoying the 'fight'. As the song says...'feeling stronger everyday...' (About to start another thread on that very subject if it hasn't been done already - inspiring music!) I had a bad one the other night.....It was the first time Rob and I had "been together" since our quit. I had been afraid cause that was always a big one for me. Right after the good stuff, nothing was better than a cigarette and a cuddle. Then I realized that again I was letting the cigarette stand in the way of something I enjoyed. Anyway, afterwords, it was great! More cuddle time, not having to worry about dropping ashes on each other. And we both weren't out of breath (in a bad way) and our bed didn't smell like an ashtray anymore. It just seems to be getting better and better. Great story Todash and awesome imagery. It is amazing how routine is so engrained! I went to walk the dog this morning and normally walk him for a few minutes and then I take my place against the fence waiting for him to do his business, light up and smoke away while he circles the yard in his neurotic way. As I leaned against the fence (I could almost feel a groove there where I had done this perhaps a thousand times) and reached into my jacket pocket, found the lighter and looked for my pack of cigarettes. When I couldn't find them, I almost started back to the house to retrieve them. That's when I stopped myself. That little scene nearly put me into a craving fit because in my mind, I was a flick of a lighter away from satisfying that urge only to come crashing down at the realization that I had no smokes. It was a rough morning but it really showed me that I absolutely MUST change my routine and anticipate any needed changes. I've had so many crazy trigger's, but one thing I would like to mention (the bright side to the trigger's), is that as you fight them and change your routines (or not change as the case may be), the trigger's diminish considerably. For those of you first starting out, that first morning cig...the after whoopi cig...the cig with the coffee, the cig after a meal...the cig when we are stressed, yada, yada, yada....all start slowly fading into the neverland. I do not crave a cig in the morning or after meals or anytime during daily activities. My trigger's are more big events that come out of know where. 1/2 time at a basketball game, when I would normally slide out for a cig.... So shopper's and couples and dog walker's...it does get better...the trigger's fade as you reassociate them without a cig. Just keep taking it one hour, one activity and one day at a time, and it will get easier. Careful of that ol' nic, he is wicked an sneaky. I know when I first quit and found myself alone I would start to calculate " I could get a few drags here, I could just go this route and catch a cig., etc. etc. etc." that's nic talking. He will try to convince you of all sorts of things. Stand strong. You did great today!!!!!!!!!!! You recognized it for what it was. You are not nic. he is not you. you are stronger - REALLY. He can't smoke w/o your hand and your mouth and your lungs. Why would you lend those precious gifts to someone who wants to use them to kill you? Geesh - My stories aren't nearly as exciting - I have got to get a life!! Anyway...triggers were always a strange experience for me...sometimes I would be expecting the worst and everything was fine and then some tiny little thing (like a friend phoning) would throw me into major crave mode. Guess we always have to protect our quits. Way to go resisting those (seemingly overwhelming) urges! You are doing SO well! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 117 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,873 Amount Saved: $936 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 10 Mins: 32 Seconds: 13
