Looking for help, friend quit with me, thinks she can be a casual smoker

Hi there, I have a friend who quit somking a few days after me.. She has been doing great but we were talking earlier and she was saying that if she stays quit until May when she goes on her vacation she is going to have a few cigarettes while she is away.. I told her I had read somewhere that there is something in you that re-awakes (is that a word?..lol) after you have quit for so long and you smoke again and it is very easy to relapse.. She seems to think that she can do this which is fine but I want to be able to give her some info about this so she can re-consider her decision.. Anyone have any suggestions? Im doing fine with my quit but the difference between me and her is that I am getting myself educated about the addiction and she isn't.. I'm not going to stalk her, if she decides to start again it's not my problem and doesn't effect my quit BUT I would just love to throw a few articles her way so she herself can get educated and see that this probably isn't such a good idea.. She doesn't really have acess to the net, I now realize she isn't as serious about quitting as I am so I don't think she would read a book about it.. I myself KNOW that if I took a puff of a cigarette I would be a slave to it again also but I wish I could educate her a lil bit without being overwhelming about it..lol She checks her email at work so I'll do a search for some articles and send a few her way.. when i quit the first time, i said to myself, i will smoke cigars when i am retired. I picked up the cigar at 40 and have not retired. These conditional quits never work. It was very hard for me to quit this time that i had to go on medication (Chantix). You decide to quit this sh* for good, only then you succeed. I QUIT SMOKING FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS. THREE YEARS AGO I HAD A LITTLE STRESS AND FOR SOME REASON CIGARETTES POPPED IN MY HEAD. I BOUGHT A PACK AND WAS IMEDIATELY HOOKED AGAIN. IT WAS JUST LIKE I HAD NEVER STOPPED ALL THOSE YEARS. NOW I AM TRYING AGAIN TO STOP THE HABIT. I HAVE RESET ME QUIT DATE TO THIS FRIDAY, AND WITH THE HELP OF EVERYONE HERE, AND MY DETERNINATION, I WILL MAKE IT THIS TIME. TELL YOUR FRIEND DON'T START. IT IS NOT AN OPTION. SHE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY HOOKED AGAIN. remind her that this is an addiction. Just like with Alcohol, smokers are addicted. We CANNOT have just one, we CANNOT go back. Hopefully she will see this and see how bad it is and not go back. She doesnt have to do anything, she makes that choice. I would ask her why? Why would you gain all this LIFE just to throw it away. Remind her of her time, goals, energy, remind her of why she quit. Maybe a video diary, like on a day when she is really motivated and has a flash of a light over her head... like smelling a smoker and about gagging. Then play it back to her. Butterfly: I have to agree with Penguin on this. Your quit must come first. I know there are those (my husband is one of them) who really believe they can be a casual smoker. I don't buy it. Perhaps some of us are MORE addicted than others and it affects us in greater ways, but an addiction is still an addiction. Besides, your friends seems to be viewing May and the opportunity to smoke as a GOOD thing, as some kind of a reward. That tells me she's not ready to quit. For her, cigarettes are still a friend. That's very dangerous thinking and you cannot get caught up in that. You know better and have made such a wise choice to quit. Good for you and keep it up. Suggest to your friend that she put a few pieces of clothing in a bin or zip lock bag then open it and take a good smell after she has been smoke free for a while. That certainly worked for me when I had a crave after a month or so :8o: My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/22/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 179 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,087 Amount Saved: $1979.74 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 7 Mins: 23 Seconds: 43

Waiting till May is going to be one lllloooonnnnggg crave! That is deprivation at its worst. She has a choice! If she makes it till then, which I doubt she will (cause she is already thinking about) she can smoke (in which case she will be right back to her usual pattern in just about no time), or she can choose not to. Does she know of this site? Or others? There is some good books on the market. You have heard of one spoken about quite a bit here. Don't get caught up in her desire to NOT to be smoke free. We are all addicts. I for one know that if I have one puff, I'll will be a slave to it once more. You have to protect your quit at all costs. Worry about you, first. Just my opinion. you tell your friend that thats nothing but her not really wanting to quit, before i threw the ciggs down this time, ihad stopped smoking for quite a while , then went on vacation. guess what? I smoked, thinking i could just do it for that week, and throw them back down when i got back home. ha! i hated myself! i really beat myself up bad. got really depressed , smoked some more, because i felt like it didnt really matter anyway, and i didnt realize till much later i really messed up. tell her that it just wont work. PERIOD!!!! you concentrate on you, ok im taking one day at a time, and this time im gonna win! Platinum, Let her know that this not a goal to be reaching. If she reaches May, then she can have the money saved to buy souvenirs or spend the day on a boat! She will not fair well if she rewards herself with smoking. Hopefully by then it will be out of her head and not a thought anymore. If she has a couple, it will awaken the nicodemon and it can spiral downward from there. You are a good friend, so keep supporting and come lean on us if needed :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
