Hi all. I smoked my last cigarette 5 days ago. I have two small children (ages 3 and 1), and am almost 12 weeks pregnant with my third child. I'm ashamed to say I didn't quit when I was pregnant with my first two, I only cut down a bit. They were both born completely healthy and perfect, but I still feel badly about it. I did everything to give them a good start except quit. I've been smoking since I was 14, and I just turned 25 a few months back. Recently, I've started experiencing chest congestion, and the smokers cough, which I never had before. I'd tried quitting before, and all the stresses in my life brought me right back to it, within 2-3 days, the cravings were SO overwhelming, even with nicotene gum. I caught my 3 year old mimicking smoking, and that was the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. I do not want my children to think smoking is okay just because Mommy does it. My husband smokes also, and he tells me he is just not ready to give it up. I can't make him, but he knows he can not smoke in the house, or the car. Anyhow, I finished my last cigarette, I emptied my ashtrays, washed them all, and put them away. I always had a Coke when I smoked, so I finished my last Coke as well. I know that my drinking a Coke would make it harder for me to resist, because I'd enjoyed the two together for the past 8 years. I'm drinking lots of water, caffeine free teas, and chewing gum after meals, which is when the craving would be strongest for me. Strangely enough, I haven't really had any cravings. I don't know if it's because of the preventative measures I automatically took, or what. It feels different this time, somehow. I signed up here though, because a lot of the people in my life smoke (ones I can't avoid completely), and I know I will need people to talk to during this journey. So...yeah. Sorry this was so long. Thank you all for the encouragement and kind words. I was glad to know I wasn't the only one who felt I had to give up a secondary addiction (my Coke) in order to beat the first. As far as the possible headaches go from lack of caffeine, I'm not cold turkey on caffeine. I still get a little each day, just not from Coke, or any other soda. Generally, I'll have a cup of hot tea in the early afternoon, so I'm not totally without it, but not having the urge to smoke along with it. I still haven't really had any cravings, but I can tell you that my scalp has been sore, my nose is more stuffed up now than usual, and is sore internally also. Otherwise, I'm feeling good. No headaches, no nausea (or if there is any, I can't distinguish it from the pregnancy nausea), no sweating or dizziness. I'm feeling pretty good. Treyya, This time feels different to me, too. I think when we make up our minds to do it, we just stop fighting the quit and only fight the addiction. I know that sounds silly or trite, but it's so true. And you have 3 excellent reasons to fight the addiction. Please do write as much or as little as you wish. We love people who post, it gives us a renewed sense of usefullness and I don't know about you, but feeling like I did something worthwhile and helping someone else is a really big rush! Bigger than smoking ever was or could be. I warn you, however, that you may experience some serious headaches with giving up the Coke as well as the smokes, not as a scare for you, just trying to prepare you for possible caffeine withdrawal on top of nicotine withdrawal, which may (or may not) cause headaches. See how confusing this addiction thing is? Anyway, welcome, and again, post as much as you like. Hi Treyya, I just read your original post and the rest of this thread. Don't know how I missed it yesterday, anyway.....Congratulations on your decision to quit! It's the hardest thing I've ever done BUT I've never done anything I've been more proud of!!! Our stories are a lot alike except you figured out you needed to quit much earlier in your life than I did! Good for you! I've had some of the same withdrawal junk that you have, especially the nose thing. Mine did eventually feel normal again in about a week or so. My husband is still smoking also and I just deal with that as it comes. Hang in there and use all the resources here on the SSC. We are all in this together! Life is good! Hi Treyya - Welcome to Scc - You are doing so well - 5 days already. I haven't had an ice tea since I quit smoking (those 2 went together too) and I'm sticking mostly to green tea and water. What a great gift you are giving to yourself and your family! Keep posting and let us know how you are doing. Treyya, You and I have a lot in common. Except for the third child, I can barely handle 2. Mine are 4 and 1. My babe just started walking, and I am so thankful I quit before he did. It sounds like you got the right attitude, and good things going for you. My 4yr old started having problems breathing at night, that is what finaly got me to quit. My hubby also smokes. It is hard but possible. The major reasons for quiting are my kids. Someone needs to be strong and healthy for them. Besides I hated being short of breath, and could not play because I needed a smoke.. Anyway enough about me. You can do this. Keep your reason close and bennifits closer. Completly put smoking out of your brain. Meaning you are not just quiting becuase you are pregnant. You are quiting for good. You can do this. I will try to get the im so if you need anything. I am rooting for you..
