Need someone to help me though this

Hi Cd :) Welcome to the forum! I think you did the right thing by setting a quit date well in advance. I did it that way too and it gave me a chance to get used to and accept my new commitment. This time, when my quit date came, I had spent time reading and lurking about the things that helped others quit. The hardest thing I had to do was make that final commitment and write out my pledge. I waited until almost the last minute to do it, but felt so relieved once it was posted. Truly, for me, the preparation and acceptance was much harder than the actually quit. The Christmas and New Year Holidays can be stressful enough even with the cigarettes you're used to, so you may well be doing the right thing by waiting for them to pass before starting to quit. Good luck, Cd. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your posts. I'm right with Jan, the Voice of Experience, on this one, CD. With a quit date so far in the future, with all due respect, you'd be a fool not to take advantage of all the new technologies. No reason to make this quit worse than it needs to be. If you do the drugs, make sure they're in your system 2 weeks before the quit date. If you do NRT, make sure you have everything in place before the big day. Most important of all, though, work the program!! You have all the time in the world to do a thorough job on your workbook, to develop your own tools and mechanisms, and to get yourself ready. Use that time wisely, my friend, and it will pay off in spades when the time comes. Wor, work, work now so you can reap, reap, reap when you need to. peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 39 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,990 Amount Saved: $214.5 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 23 Mins: 13 Seconds: 16

HiCD,I feel your pain! This is my lst.entry as well.I am 49 I smoked from age 21-31. Yeap, I was smoke free for15 years. Stopped cold turkey. I started back 2 1/2 years ago and I'm back to almost a pack a day. All it took was ONE and I was back into the habit again. I have tried everything out there to quit. Hypnosis, inhaler, tapes, books & the antidepressant Wellburtin. The medication left me with no desire to smoke however, my body did not agree with the med. I was so desperate that I continued to take the medication until I ended up in emergency from the side affects. I did that twice. What I do know is that no matter how bad we want to quit, it won't happen until we have made the true DECISION.I am excited about this program because of the support it will provide.People who do not smoke, just cannot relate to us. I have found that Support groups work. Support groups have helped me with my battle with depression. We are all in this together and I look forward to our new journey together. You are only a failure if you fail to stop working at it. PS. sounds like you dealing with anxity which is making it harder for you. I suggest that you exam where is anxity is coming from in your life and do some leg work on how to cope with it. I know only too well the struggles of anxity.Help is out there for you. Let's stay in-touch. We can help each other heal. Hi and welcome Cd! I am a psych nurse, so I have a little knowledge of panic attacks and major breakdowns. Do please go to your doctor first, and get whatever nicotine replacement and/or anxiety reducing meds the doctor can give you. There is absolutely no reason for you to do something that causes you to "freak out" or to "have a major breakdown" with all the medical help and the different treatments available today. They can help you by reducing the physical symptoms while you are dealing with the mental and emotional symptoms. But if you had a 5 year quit, you already know most of this. I'm with Katy, I was a 1 - 2 pack a day smoker and I would drive to the store at 3 am just because I "only" had half a pack for the night. I quit doing most things with other people because I couldn't smoke. I didn't go to movies, I didn't ride in other's cars, I didn't even go to anyone's house. I was isolated and socially inappropriate. It's pathetic, really, how much the addiction controls us while we are indulging in it. But once we decide that enough is enough, then that's it. We are free! And it really is worth it. Easy? No. Simple? Yes. Just don't light another cigarette once you have quit. Plan your quit and work your plan. It works if you work it. You are smart and you oh so deserve it. Hi CD Anxiety is one of my major issues...I really didn't think I could quit until I did. Honestly, in some ways your anxiety will decrease. Because I could not smoke at work my anxiety increased as my withdrawal systems increased. In addition, I was anxious in situations where I could not smoke for long periods of time. Once the nicotine is out of your system, you don't have to add hourly withdrawal symptoms to your anxiety. I do think that putting a quit date so far away might be a little rough on you. I know that I just quit out of the blue because I had a cough that wouldn't go away. (Disadvantage - I did not have any skills or examine alternative methods of quitting) (Advantage - I did not have any time to worry about my quit or to have my anxiety grow) You will experience some anxiety during your quit...but you only need to go through one day at a time. Eventually one day leads into another and the idea of quitting does not seem so terrifying. Good luck!
