Monica...I commend you for deciding it's time to quit, but you have to get this plane off the ground in order to fly :) I think it will help if you make some plans. When you have had these slips, just how could you avoid them? Get rid of the availability of the smokes. ALL of them..toss the ashtrays and lighters, etc. Don't take that trip outside to your smoking place..that will be a trigger to light up. Fix yourself a relaxing corner somewhere with a book, a walkman, a computer, etc...something you can go and do when the urge to smoke strikes. Arm yourself with straws to chew on, hard candies to suck on, gum to chew. Using a quitting aid is fine...I used the patches for a 16 week course...I felt it really helped me. STart keeping a quit journal. SEt up a reward plan for each and every day that you remain smoke free....try to not look too far ahead....just deal with the right now....just don't smoke "now"....keep distracting and delaying. As hard as it seems, it gets better.....slipping and giving the addiction a fix just guarantees that he will keep screaming for more...it's like dealing with an unruly toddler....you GOTTA stay firm in what you set out to do or you loose ground. I can understand the stress of your caring for your hubby. I just stayed with my mom for 2 months nursing her through a tough time.....caregiving is a VERY stressful job. I found that ANY time to myself was a blessing. I prayed a lot....prayers of thankfulness....I thought that helped too. Good luck to you...stick close to this site, support here can sometimes be the deciding factor in the battle to beat the demon called Nicotine Addiction. Remember...you CAN win this battle.
