What a horrible disease!

Thank you to all who have replied. I went back and read this post that I wrote about 8 months (this has been going on a LONG time, but it's never been as bad as it is now... he's definitely in his last days) and I realized that I have realized benefits of quitting other than not getting sick and there are so many, which is definitely a good thing because if the only benefit of quitting was the chance that we might not get sick and die due to a smoking related illness, then how many of us really would quit or stay quit? I don't think I would have. I couldn't be happier that I HAVE quit and certainly won't let this weaken my resolve to stay quit in the slightest, although I must admit, this last week has been rather difficult, craving wise. If nothing else, this quit will forever, from this day on, be dedicated to the loving memory of my grandfather. This will not ever happen to any of my loved ones due to my smoking. That is my vow. Crave the Quit! Thank you to everyone who responded. I've been extremely busy the last few days and haven't had a chance to come here and thank everybody for their support, but I definitely want to have a chance to do that. You all are so awesome! My father called me today in a very somber mood. I was expecting the worst, of course, and got a lump in my throat as soon as he said the words "I've got some bad news." I was expecting him to say that my grandfather had passed... instead, he told me that he had to put our dog down. :( I sat there and cried on the phone... and he cried too. I think part of my tears were of relief, which sounds so horrible! I mean, I will miss that dog so terribly and am not happy that he's gone, but at the same time, it's not my grandfather... yet. As for my grandfather, he was apparently doing better yesterday. He was awake and alert, laughing and telling jokes... but then had a turn for the worse today and is back in intensive care. The dread of waiting for it to happen, the wondering how long we have with him, the constant worry... are worse than the actual death, it seems. It seems like it will be a relief just for it to finally be over, even though that sounds awful! I don't want him to die, but the waiting seems almost as bad, if not worse, than the actual passing! I'm definitely a wreck, but I will not smoke. Smoking isn't an option in my life and it's not even something that I want to do. I've seen the horrible things it's done and do NOT want to put my family through that. Thanks again to everyone who responded, for the support. I do appreciate it. Crave the Quit! Butterfly The road looks really bumpy for you right now. Remember to take care of yourself in all of this - only when we are there for ourselves can we truly and usefully be there for others. You are in my thoughts. Go gently. Hi bfswimmer, dedicating your forever quit to your grandfather is a wonderful idea. My mom passed away this year. Losing someone you love is never easy. Think of the good times with him. Pam I am so sorry to hear of all your troubles. I will keep your grandfather in my prayers. My mother had some heart problems this week end but she is better now. One thing I noticed when she was in ICU, was a bunch of people there visiting a relative that was terminally ill and they REEKED of smoke, I mean it was so disgusting. I am so glad to be quit and not leaving my loved ones with that smell as a memory of me.
