missing good smoking opportunities/travel

not sure it this is weird or standard cravings stuff. but i keep seeing places i used to smoke and feeling a sense of loss/remorse/longing. i don't smoke in my house or car, so certain places were great for smoking--like a store with an overhang to keep me out of weather, an uncrowded park, a friend's smoke-friendly house. i'm also really worried about my vacation in march--it's two whole months away and i'm obsessing. going to paris, which is tied for my fave place on earth. but i cannot imagine having a good time without the treat of french smokes with wine/coffee. and paris is such a friendly place to smoke (not for much longer in certain public places). it's the european vegas in terms of how many places allow smoking. anyhoo, i'm obsessing. like my american spirits are a lover that dumped me, and now i see traces of our former relationship everywhere...and even wonderful stuff like going to paris doesn't seem like it will be much fun. but see, *i* dumped american spirits...so why am i so sad about the end of the affair? quit: 1/8/07 on chantix

thank you all for the advice. yesterday was full of job/life stress and an especially bad day for cravings. i was missing my bad relationship. it is well below zero this morning and i am loving not smoking (i never smoke inside). i ran nearly two miles (in fits and starts) and feel great.

I know what it's like to be attracted to places and opportunities to smoke. I think time and strength helps with that. I'm not in a position to t/a international travel, but several people here have shared their expereinces, and not so long ago. check out some old posts. Same thing re: the american spirits. You know, there were some people that posted a while back that said they were closet smokers, and so it wasn't a problem for them not to smoke when there were people around and things to do but give them a few free minutes and some alone time, they were craving like crazy. So ever quit has it's dangerous points. But the point of this is that every time you withstand the trigger, which is the visual cue of the overhanging roof, or thinking of going to a "smoke friendly" home, you get stronger and the triggers lose their power. If you were to hit an animal after blowing a whistle, it would begin to expect the strike each time you blew the whistle. But if you then stopped hitting when you blew the whistle, the whistle would lose it's power and the animal would no longer cringe or try to run away. In the same vein, when you do not feed the receptors in the brain when they would normally expect it, they will eventually give up and go to sleep (but they will hang around in there forever more). Now don't go thinking I'm advocating striking animals, it's only a simile (which is greatly different from a smilie) to make a point. So keep resisting that whistle the receptors are blowing, and know that you are getting stronger and more stable in your quit every single day, and the receptors are getting sleepy, sleepy, sleepy. And you do so deserve the freedom. Izzy, Be very careful when you begin to romanticize your smoking. What you must remember is that your "lover" was actually trying to kill you, day after day. I don't think you'd ever say that smoking was the only way you could have fun, right? Go to Paris, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy your holiday with healthy lungs and more time on your hands! You might even find a new treat or two!!!!! Find joy in your new life! Hi Izzy - Sometimes I remember the moments that I enjoyed a cigarette and, for a little while, I feel bad that won't be a part of my life anymore. However, even abusive relationships have some "good" moments. You are still fairly new in your quit...Focus on the moment and look at new ways to enjoy your smoke-free life. As it gets closer to your vacation, you can start to plan how you are going to enjoy your smoke-free holiday. I imagine this has been an issue for other ex-smokers...maybe they can offer you some suggestions on how to make sure that your vacation is fun AND smoke-free. Izzy, Although this is very common among quitters, it is time to grieve the loss* and look forward to brighter days ahead. Time to change that mindset. you see a place you use to smoke and feel that sense of loss. Contradict your thinking with a positive. * You no longer have to smoke in the rain, in the cold, in the snow... * You are now welcomed to every friends house and can just be without having to worry your bothering someone with your habit. * You can now go to any park and enjoy without having to worry you are bothering someone with your habit. Start seeing this addiction for what it is. Start researching all the negatives effects smoking has on your body. You may be suprised at what you find. Hope this helps. Izzy, I found it a challenge to do my first vacation without smoking..but, you know what? I did it. I went to San Fran for 6 days and did not have one puff! There was so much to do and see. I did not have to waste time going up and down in the elevator and outside the hotel so I could smoke. You can truly enjoy Paris without inhaling poisonous gases into your lungs. There is not one organ, not one component of your body that nicotine and cig smoke does not harm. This includes your skin, your gums,(therefore, your teeth), your eyesight, your stomach, your liver, your blood, and ESPECIALLY the two primary life giving elements of our bodies, your heart and your lungs. Give up any pleasant thoughts that you have about smoking. They are all lies. We just believed that we enjoyed smoking because we were addicts. That is the truth. Please enjoy your vacation smoke free. YOu can do it.
