Forever or a day?

Definitely a day at a time for me because I know that if I achieve that every day for the rest of my life then I will never smoke again. I think you've gotten your answer and I concur... I just wanted to say that I am glad to see you and your 4 days here. I still sometimes just focus on each breath I'm taking - paradoxically this ultimately helps me focus on the long range goals which we only get to one day (or step) at a time. all my best and... keep fightin' the good fight - fish :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/21/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 312 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,380 Amount Saved: $1560 Life Gained: Days: 40 Hrs: 10 Mins: 20 Seconds: 52

I used to say "I will not smoke today. Tomorrow I'll worry about tomorrow" then I would get up the next morning and say the same thing again. ;) However, I did set long range goals with a reward plan. For example: One week quit= Dinner out at a nice restaurant One month quit= Designer perfume One hundred days quit= MP3 player 6 months quit= Bed & Breakfast weekend One year quit= New computer Maybe set up a custom plan that appeals to you? It gives you something to look forward to and you should have some extra money from not buying sickarettes ;) At some point along the journey most are able to say "Smoking is not an option ever again" but~ it takes time. How much time varies from person to person. keep strong! A discussion has been going on in my head with you know who.... Should you tell yourself that you have quit FOREVER, and then allow opportunity for anxiety regarding that forever word to creep in, or do you tell yourself "one day at a time". - which isn't the best either, cause it leaves the back door open for possibility, because it's not forever. Does this makes sense? Comment? Penguin, Congrats on those 4 Days! I had the same question during my first week and of course the answer depends on your perspective. For me, once I realized that the physical withdrawal wouldn't actually kill me it was important for me to see the long range goal of being a non-smoker. I had to know that all the things I was trudging through (emotional and physical) that first month would actually get me somewhere I wanted to be. It's sort of like driving. It is important to watch the car in front of you but you also need a see a few cars ahead and the lay of the land you are headed towards. Also like when we first learned to drive, you are SO focused on not hitting things, being in the right gear and watching people around you. After a time all of that stuff is second nature and you get to crank the music, enjoy a drink, talk on the phone or whatever else and it gets easier and easier. I hope something in that helps you but either way, keep putting one foot in front of the other day by day and you'll be a non-smoker forever ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 815 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 16,311 Amount Saved: $3667.5 Life Gained: Days: 60 Hrs: 8 Mins: 56 Seconds: 24

Hey Penguin.... One day at a time is all you need to focus on right now. Sometimes it feels a little scarey thinking too far ahead. Many congratulations on those wonderful 4 days ~ that's more than half way through hell week!
