Why did I start in the first place! Such a loaded question and one that I talk to my children about. I can't imagine many people start smoking in their mid 20s & 30s. It starts with the first cigarette during the teens years. If only I passed when my friend stole her mother's pack. It's depressing to think years down the road you still get urges but it's encouraging to hear the cravings are fleeting. And let's not forget Peter Jennings. He quit for 20 years and started again and then died from lung cancer. I think of him when I'm having a hard moment. And Den - at least you can run! LOL Good for you and good for your lungs! Hey drjan! This is very helpful to know, thank you!! I've been feeling like I've plateaued here in my 5th week. I'm feeling tons better physically but still dealing with the "ninny" aspect of the psychological craves. :) I knew that after 31 years of smoking, that would be the hardest part for me to recover from. It is getting easier but it's also nice to have more of a ballpark figure of how much longer I can expect to deal with the remaining "90%". :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 36 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,473 Amount Saved: $175.32 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 16 Mins: 24 Seconds: 11

Dr Jan...You made me realize that I have made progress all along. Afew years ago, I started postponing my first cigarette of the day until I had reached a point where I rarely smoked before 3 or 4 p.m. This worked (in a way)...The first half of my day was non-smoking and the second half of my day was chain-smoking. The problem was that I spent the first half of my day waiting for the second half of my day to start. Now, I still get cravings in the evening (but why wouldn't I after so many years of power smoking) but now I get up earlier and enjoy my day........Smoking doesn't even enter my thoughts until sometime after supper. 15 years ago, I smoked all day at work....Now I never think about it. Gradually, my evening craves will get weaker and weaker too....and smoking will be a distant memory! Sometimes I'm not sure that I am making progress. Your post reminded me that I am. Drjan Good Post I second your analysts on your 90% craves gone in the first 8 weeks or so for the general population. Perhaps 2 to 6 weeks or longer if you are getting nicotine from NRT. The crave glitches happen after this period maybe through 6 months followed by the occasional crave glitches that are simply easy to ignore. Tryagain, I think most would agree this is not the case. Yes, most quitters will have strong feelings against smoking. How they choose to relay that message will depend on the individual. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team
