Reflections of an aging hippie

*nodding my head Rob. I get it. I have fought and I have fought hard. There are still times that I fight but those times are nothing compared to those first few months. Six months seemed to have been a turning point where things got a bit better for me and one year was Awesome! Keep negotiating. You are doing an awesome job and have a lot to be proud of. You didn't "have" to quit but you have. You have given a great example of what it is like to fight for a quit and to win. Keep winning! Congratulations! A very enlightening post, Rob. I really admire the way you call a spade a spade and don't worry about any potential backlash. I'm curious, do the negotiations get easier? And how long will the next one be for? Keep up the good quit! Ah Rob just had to drop back in to thank you. I used to be an aging hippie, now just an aging, cranky old fart. I appreciate you more than words will say, yet there are just some people like you, RD that I have taken a personal interest in. I have watched you from the get go, read all of your posts, commented on occasion and have enjoyed your determination and will power in this fight on nicotine addiction. You are the new breed of leadership in this war and so badly need to help others to quit. Hang tight my friend and keep the faith. You will beat this waz on addictin to the nicotine and I think I told you that a long time ago when you and Mr Ed came aboard. Please keep leading the way regardless of those who disagree with you. Thank you Rob! Wonderful well-stated thread! I struggled for way longer than most people seemed to. Even though it wasn't constant anymore, it still seemed the battle would never end. But I can tell you this....some time in the last two months...I started having whole days when I didn't think of smoking! :) It does happen! and it is awesome! Keep it going... Cigarettes Not Smoked

There was someone on here one time (I don't remember who...they might still be here) who had a story about dropping their cigarette in the car and then running off the road trying to retrieve it. I think they hit a tree. There are dangers in smoking...houses burn down, children get ashes in their eyes, we set our clothes on fire, or burn our fingertips. And there is also the issue of dignity...look at any person smoking and see how much dignity is there. But that's not really the subject. I don't really follow this whole thread, to be honest. I've never seen anyone belittle anyone else's efforts or method of quitting. My experience here has always been one of support from others. Everyone has their own story to tell, some are more dramatic or graphic than others. Some choose not to tell their story or be more reticent than others. But I believe that everyone who quits an addiction pays their dues in the process of quitting, dues that give them the right to tell their story however they see it. And no one else can judge how much pain that person has gone through. I applaud all of us here for fighting the good fight, whatever weapons or battle plan we choose. the agony and the ectasy of the quit....from not merely an aging hippie, but an old one lol don't you think some of it has to do with how badly you "want" to stop smoking, plus your attitude about your quit?? Personally, when a smoking thought would/or does come to mind, I can't allow my brain to allow that thought to "entertain" me or dwell there for long...to do so will bring forth some sort longing to smoke??.....it isn't really like a crave?....but it's a longing for something that old memories try to convince me is something I am "missing"?? it has become easy over time to send this thought right on through my mind.....nowdays it leaves as quickly as it comes....but it still exists....rushing at times of crisis or stress. I believe it's cause I spent literally "years" training myself to handle these situations and emotions with nicotine....the more stressful the situation, the more intense my consumption of smokes would become. in short, I don't think I can really just "sit and dwell" on smoking without conjuring up a longing to do so? I don't "want" to smoke, but I have no control over this "thought" that rushes in......I hope this makes sense? I don't want quitters to think that I still crave smoking....I don't....I rarely even think of it, even when around smokers....it simply isn't a part of my life anymore....but I guess it wasa BIG part at one time....and the old memories and brain farts of the junky don't give up easily. lol this is a great thread hang tough all of you....it continues to get better.....and 99% of the time it feels like FREEDOM!! ;) Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1708 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 68,348 Amount Saved: $9735.6 Life Gained: Days: 222 Hrs: 21 Mins: 5 Seconds: 32
