A recovering alcoholic friend of mine (sober 18 years) told me that the psychological part of any addiction never really goes away...it lingers, it just gets easier to ignore. Even though I'm only in my second day nic free, I'm referring to the whole process like a bad boyfriend. With every thing that I have read it takes 3 days (72 hours) for the actual nicodemon to leave the body but it does take longer to reprogram your brain to know you don't need it. Hang in there. Yeah, PLEASE keep us in touch. You guys with the 3-figure quits are the prophets among us who continue to remind us that the quit is not a short-term challenge; it's a life-long battle. Me, I was like "Make it through 3 days and you're home free;" then it was "Okay, do the 3-week thing," then I found some personal spiritual satisfaction at the 40-day and 50-day mark, but the crave (probably more habit than actual desire) is still a huge part of my life. I'm beginning to realize that the crave/urge/desire/habit -- whatever it is -- will probably never leave me alone. So I'm just trying to make room for it in my life without giving it one inch of power. I think my cravings come mostly out of "habit". I will be "missing" something and then realize what it is. I quit last April and slipped over the summer and finally came to the realization that I cannot have just one. I really really want to make it this time. It is helping that my husband has stopped smoking as well. Everytime I think about smoking I remind myself of the reasons that I don't want to smoke - the smell, expense, and just the freedom of it all - and the craving goes away. Boy, is my husband crabby though. Luckily?? he is away trucking most of the week - so I don't have that temptation to light up. For him, it has been 5 days - for me I haven't smoked since a wedding I attended in June. I don't want to go through "hell week" again!!! And it's just as bad the second time. Tonight I saw a clip on TV (cause a lot of people want to quit at the beginning of a New Year) and I thought - I am sooo proud of myself for getting to where I am - but it is still a battle. Sometimes I am so sad - isn't that crazy. Thanks for your support - this really helps. Dottie~ U might try thinking of it as a 'healing process' rather than an 'on going battle'. Chances are you smoked for MANY years. Even if healing takes you one whole year or more that's still pretty darn quick in comparison to how long you smoked I bet. At this point in your quit it's all a mind game so how you think about your quit can make all the difference. Keep feeling good about yourself. You are a success! Don't ever let your thoughts begin to romance the cigarette again. Smoking even 'just one puff' won't keep you from thinking about smoking. (it starts the cycle all over again!) Only [u]never taking another puff[/u] will lead a nicotine addict to complete peace of mind one day. Stay strong and think NOPE (Not One Puff Ever) and keep up the 'reward system' to prevent any feelings of deprivation. Dottie... You are perfectly normal. A lot of us have bad days from time to time. There are two points here. 1. It is nothing like the beginning of the quit was and 2. We had bad days when we smoked as well. The I'm missing something feeling will eventualy go away but you must remember that we are all addicts here. The cigarette served as our closet companion for many years and moving on without it doesn't happen over night. There is a quit process that we must go through. There is also an acceptance stage and you will be there soon.
