Hanging In There

FaithFreedom, thank you for your words. I do have to develop a positive way of having a talk with myself. It's so strange. I'm diabetic and was diagnosed 4 years ago. I've gone for years now without putting a biscuit close to my mouth. And I love biscuits. I've stuck to a very strict diet and have kept my blood sugar under control. Before that, at age 22, out of the blue I had a seizure. As it turned out, I have a scar in the vision center part of the brain and have to take medication to prevent seizures for 24 years now. I don't like taking meds, I don't like taking insulin, and I don't like not having sweets or carbs. But, my attitude was far more positive and I've managed both illnesses very well. This shouldn't be any different for me but it has been. I didn't approach it in the right way with the first "haunting" that came out of the blue. I do have to be more positive. I believe, for me, that I have to keep in mind that I'm not being deprived of cigarettes but rather, I'm depriving those cigarettes from controlling me. I have to be the one in charge here. That's the only way I'm going to make it. That was the attitude I had with two illnesses and, being an addict, I believe that's the attitude I need to have to have a successful quit. And I need you and everyone else to tell me how horrible I look with a smoke hanging out of my mouth and how horrible I smell. ha ha ha I'm laughing but I'm serious too. It helps me to be reminded all of the time because those reminders help me with my attitude about quitting and the talks I have with myself. Thank you all for your help and understanding. I appreciate it so, so much. Now, today I'm going to have more positive self talks. Thank you so much for taking some time to spend with me. That means so much. I spent the night with those cigarettes but, I didn't open them. I knew if I had, I would light one up. This morning when my husband came off of graveyards, I gave them to him and asked him to throw them away and please, not to buy anymore. Part of me wished I hadn't done that!! I really wanted to keep them and have one with my coffee this morning. Stubz, you are so right when you spoke about how "taunting" and "haunting" they are. You used the perfect words to describe how they've been treating me since I quit on Valentines Day. I think I'd manage better with a ghost haunting me instead of cigarettes. At least I'd have the sense enough to get scared and run like hell!! ha ha ha I'm still hanging in there and I need to hear how much better I'm going to feel and all those words of encouragment. Thank you so much!! This is really hard. My husband and I bought a truck for work so this evening, I walked out to see how the Cd player sounds. I guess my husband was getting himself prepared for my bad moods since I quit smoking yesterday so, he bought a pack of smokes and I found them on the seat of the truck. He didn't tell me about them, he was just arming himself just in case I went totally bonkers. I haven't opened the pack but I did bring it in the house. I don't have to tell you, since they're here, I really want one. At the same time, I know if I open them and light up, I'm really going to be disappointed in myself....down right mad at myself. Any advice? TryAgain, I'm so proud of you and your husband for vacuuming up that one cigarette. Now see, if that had been me, I would have smoked that one since it was already out of a pack. I would have convinced myself that just one smoke wouldn't hurt anything. I did know that if I had opened that full pack, no way would I have stopped at one. So, I came running to this site for support. Sad thing is, I couldn't make myself destroy the pack. I had to have my husband do it when he came home from working graveyards. I can't tell you how many times I woke up during the night just thinking about that pack of smokes. Believe me, my husband knows not to buy another pack. ha ha ha Thank you for your support. I really need it. Tutti I know you will not yet see this connection immediately, but when ever you want a cig breath deeply to remind yourself of the lung capacity that you are gaining daily...then drink water and drink water and drink water...This will remind you that you are cleansing the stench from your body...For some reason water helps me with craves...Maybe you can do the same... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 53 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,284 Amount Saved: $371 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 22 Mins: 38 Seconds: 13

Tutti: It's all about your attitude and your self-talk. I know the smokes are taunting you and haunting you, but that's because you're allowing yourself to slip into what we have all done when trying to quit smoking: feeling deprived, feeling that we have had to give up something we love. If we continue to allow ourselves to think that way, it's alsmost guaranteed that we'll cave in. That self-talk is the junkie trying to lure you back, trying to persuade you that quitting is a bad decision and that smoking is the smart choice. But you KNOW BETTER! If you truly have decided to quit smoking, then you MUST change how you talk to yourself and recognize forever that there is not ONE POSITIVE thing about smoking. You MUST focus on the VERY positive reasons you have for quitting and remember that you are a DRUG ADDICT. The taunting and haunting is the addiction -- DON'T LISTEN to the voices -- replace it with your own VERY strong commitment to stay a nonsmoker. Whenever you think you're listening to the taunting, literally say, "No, I am not a smoker -- smoking is NOT an option". You cannot be a nonsmoker if you smoke. NOPE -- Not One Puff Ever! You CAN do this -- keep the faith My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 131 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,257 Amount Saved: $1048 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 4 Mins: 32 Seconds: 48

Tutti: You said it yourself, great words: "I have to change my attitude. I'm not being deprived of cigarettes but rather, I'm depriving those cigarettes from controlling me. I HAVE TO BE THE ONE IN CHARGE HERE. That's the only way I'm going to make it." I was SO heartened to read those words from you, because you're 100% right. PLEASE remember your own words. Write them down in big block letters -- post it in your car, on your mirror, in your kitchen, wherever you'll see them often, because they're very, very important. I'm so sorry you've had so many physical ailments. PLEASE don't let the junkie thoughts allow you to forget that it may well be the next cigarette you smoke that is the final nail for your health. There is NOT ONE POSITIVE THING ABOUT SMOKING. Make a list of the many, many positives about being the nonsmoker you are. You said it yourself: you've managed two serious illnesses with your positive attitude and positive self-talk, now use those same skills to conquer this hideous addiction. We'll all help. Congratulations on your success -- keep it going and keep the faith! Congratulations on your quit, and if I were you, I'd get rid of those cigarettes. I could never have stood the temptation in the beginning of my quit. If they're not there, maybe you won't think about them so much. Hi dear. Do not lite one. Honestly, it does no good. My husband has been doing this quit thing since the first of the year. He is battling, I mean downright battling. He will quit for a week and use the patches, then smoke on the weekend and back to buying packs the next week. Those patches aren't cheap, and neither are the cigarettes, so he needs to pick one or the other! =) If you honestly want to quit, and really don't ever want to smoke again, don't lite one up. You will not enjoy it like you may think you will. Take it day by day, second by second if you have to. I sure have had to lately. As tempting as they may look, and I know they haunt you, taunt you, but trust me, give it a week and your lungs will loosen up and you will hack out that nasty tar and gunk from your lungs and you will find new meaning in a breath of fresh air! Don't give up! It feels good this winter to walk out in this blistering cold and be able to breath with out my lungs feeling like they are about to collapse! Stick with it, you'll be amazed.
