Luna, I spent a bit of time researching the connection cigarettes and drop in blood sugar as my doctor told me to eat to see if that would make me feel better re panic attack I thought I was having. Very interesting stuff! I'm a little tired and will read this thread again. Can I link a very interesting site I'm still digesting, do you know or is that against the rules anyone? It also describes me - I never ate until dinner time. Coffee, Water, Tea and cigarettes were my mainstay. Still amazed at what I'm learnning about tobacco and addiction generally. I thought I was having a panic attack yesterday but thinking back and following my doctor's orders, I think I had a very sharp drop in blood sugar. I hope you're doing great and Luna, I cannot thank you and Kiwi for your immediate and continuted support (and everyone here!) - your two posts always seems to strike a chord in my brain (which has been dimented for a few weeks ;) . Cheers and I hope you feel better and share tips with those who don't know much about the link between cigarettes, non smokers and blood sugar! I've been trying to eat small meals today. Changing food habits - I have no appetite, it's strange. Sorry babbling again! Marie

Hi Interesting, this is a great topic, we are sharing similar stages. I too had noticed the shakes more than usual for me. Since this quite I have had a sugar drop episode 3/4 times. Takes about a 1/2 hour of craming foods into me to start feeling better. Stopping smoking means starting to do loads of stuff I havent done in the past. This is all so new, I not only am trying to stay smoke free, I am trying to learn how to eat healthy, maintain a healthy sugar level, and not be a b**** to all the good folks around me. I did manage to get an exercise cd and did it today, oh my God am I oooout of shape. I feel like I need a nap. ha ha ha. Thanks again, everyone. I read, copied and kept the post from the link. It is great information! I'm going to have to read it even better to digest it all. I really think my urges to smoke, especially in the mornings, have something to do with blood sugar. I find myself trying to find something to fight it all morning long. So... yes, I will try fruit juices, etc., and think I'll make an appointment with the doctor. I want to get a physical, but thought I'd wait until nic is all out of my system. I stopped the gum a couple days ago. Being an all or nothing thinker does have some advantages. I know I can't smoke, because I either smoke or I don't. I have this urge to be healthy, so am starting on the food side of it now. All or nothing... healthy or not! I usually don't like my all or nothing thinking, but I think in this case, it is serving me well! Thanks again you all for answering! Thanks you guys! I had no idea blood sugar was affected by smoking until I read Darkmyer's list of withdrawals:
Poor concentration and focus could also be due to low blood sugar. Nicotine releases huge amounts of fatty sugars into our blood, by triggering the brain to release adrenaline, which in turn causes the body to revert to 'fight or flight mode', releasing the fatty sugars. This is why many smokers skip breakfast or lunch without feeling hungry, they are taxing their bodies into constant 'alert mode'.
I'm not diabetic, have been tested, and blood sugar levels run normal, but have always had to watch my sugar intake. I'd say even before I smoked, but I don't remember! lol I was just a kid... who cares about blood suger when you're a kid. BTW, had my blood pressure taken the other day. It was 98/62. Am I still alive? Does anyone have information on the effects of smoking and blood sugar levels? Anyone have ideas on controlling it? From mid-morning until noon, I seem to fight with the blood sugar. I drink lots of water and that seems to help, but it's still out of whack. Not to the point of dropping to the bottom, but just there, nevertheless. Now I know why I used to want to smoke all morning! Hi Deb, Glad you and Freedom are experiencing the same thing. I was eating chocolate this morning to get a fix! I'm also trying to eat healthier, which means I'm munching on an apple right now. I found a book which I ordered from Amazon, called The Good Mood Diet. While I'm not going to attempt a full blown diet right now, it looked like it had good information on eating healthy and feeling good at the same time. I'm trying to find ways to get the "fix" or fake energy that nicotine and caffiene give you. I know there are healthy ways to feel better overall. If I find something good, I'll let you know, and would you guys do the same? I'm going to try eating something with protein for breakfast and see if I can avoid be before lunch time sugar crash. If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd appreciate the input! Thanks! Yes, I just found the information about the blood sugars.. I was only thinking about people with diabetes and how smoking effects the blood pressure end of it.. I was just going to quote something that I researched on the net but it's already been said. Yes you're still alive. That reading for your bp is low normal and is acceptable providing you are not feeling dizzy or light headed. My normal bp is about the same ,, maybe a wee bit higher and my dr said as long as I'm feeling ok not to worry. If you do feel dizzy or faint take in some canned soup..as the sodium will increase your bp and you'll feel better in a 1/2 hr of eating it. all the best.. M. Smoking usually effects blood pressure not blood sugars. Are you a diabetic? If yes, are you testing and is your blood sugar low in the mornings? - if yes, then you should be drinking orange juice or apple juice to bring up the levels. It's quite unlikely that there's any correlation between smoking and blood sugar levels. M.
