Running Out Of Steam?

Speaking as a new quitter....I do agree that so many wonderful posts and inspirations have come before my mindless rattlings of my own posts...but at the same time everyone's quit and thought processes are different. Since we are not a face to face support group, all we have are our words. Also, having people posting that are close to my quit date and possibly going through the same thing I am motivates and gives me support. Reading an older post of a person who has quit for more than 6 months also gives me inspiration that if they can do it...so can I. I don't mind reading the same advice over and over again, because this just reinforces that particular advice in my head. To me, this group is about keeping the longer quitter's still quit and helping the new quitters be successful. I think ever day a quitter is quit or stays quit is inspiration enough for me. We are saving lives (our own included) and effecting change in the quitter's lives and the lives of their families. Even though at times we may be redundant or say something that has been said 100 times before, it is still meaningful for the person posting and possibly another person who needed to hear it. I'm so thankful for those of you that have proceeded me in this process. Your knowledge and strength is what makes this SSC Support Group what it is today. Just plain inspirational!!!! Oh Penitent, I can see what you are saying, but I still see lot's of magic in the people in the SSC, both old and new quitter's. I see hope in the eyes of the quitter's that are proud of themselves and have made it to 1 week, 1 month and so on. Each crave that has been beat and each trigger that is conquered creates magic and hope. Hope of a smoke free life and to be free of this horrible addiction. You are still a part of that hope, because you have the experience and the wisdom to help us. Lord knows we need it today and in the weeks and months to come. We have a long journey ahead of us and we need all the help we can get. That is why we are here, posting our hearts out and opening ourselves up to you and other's for any shred of hope and strength to get us through today. We need you, please don't ever loose the passion for one more person to quit this addiction. Our hope lies in your past posts and your future posts. Please help us. You are sooooo needed!! You and other's like you are the magic that makes the SSC what it is today. Pen, I think to YOU it might seem like the same old thing that's been said 1,000 times, but to new quitters, it might be the first time they've seen those words. Just like Mr. Ed said, there's only so much we can say in regards to quitting smoking. And if you stick around this site long enough, you will see the same questions being asked, the same answers being given and the same conflicts of opinions on certain topics. Not too many new things to say... but to some, it might not be the same old thing. I DO try to bump old posts as often as needed, but I also don't bump posts just to bump posts... I only bump them when I see that somebody has a question regarding something and I feel that an old posts says it best. I find that bumping posts just to bump them may bump DOWN somebody's cry for help that could have gotten more response had it stayed on the first page. More often, I will just link old posts to the post at hand, so the person who is having a difficult time doesn't have to run around trying to find the post that was bumped. But I definitely agree that there are some great gems out there that can be of a lot of help to a lot of people, and many of us DO try to bring those to the front as often as needed. Thanks for the reminder that there's a lot of good stuff back there if you want to find it. Crave the Quit! Penitent, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. There is only so much to be said about quitting. Bumping up old posts is a great way to learn from those who have come before us. Danielle _______________________ The SSC Support Team

Very true Pen. I've certainly been inspired by a lot of stuff in the archives. What I also feel is true is that, now I've been here for a while, I see posts written by newer quitters, which make me think ' Yes, but that's making a very similar point to what, say Shevie was making 6 months ago'. There are only so many points to be made..... Posts no longer inspire me in the same way; it's not because they are not well written, it's probably because I am no longer the needy quitter of yesterday. I still feel that the SSC is as valuable to quitters as it always was, but like you, I come here now not because I need to, but because I am grateful and I owe this place more than I can pay back Have a good weekend, Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 293 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,798 Amount Saved: 2197.5 Life Gained: Days: 48 Hrs: 21 Mins: 24 Seconds: 24

Pen, I'd like to second what Kaitilina has said - you are most definitely needed on this site! I agree that things move on as our quit ages and we can't get so passionate about posts as we used to, but perhaps you are forgetting that when quitters see your stats, they want to know what it's like to be YOU on 999,999 days (or me on 290). Any more of this and I'll have to start a 'Because you are Special, Penitent' thread.... Perhaps a 'Maltsters' appointment is overdue(?) all the best from just down the road Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 294 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,835 Amount Saved: 2205 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 2 Mins: 21 Seconds: 45

N2K - yep that was a good post, thank you..... I must agree with Pen ~ I have bumped some things that I feel would help newer quitters - although it does not seem like they seek out knowledge from the past - maybe not aware they can utilize the "search messages" at any time. I can understand why many feel jaded by being here so long, but what I say to them is THANK YOU - the new people don't always realize that what you have to offer is the best advice they will get anywhere. So stay positive, someone out there is being helped - it's just not always apparent. Hey Pen~Lord knows I've said nothing original in months!~lol Nevertheless, I did read something 'new & fresh' written by Rusty the other day that I thought was very good. I'll see if I can find it. I smiled to myself the other day when Kaitilina came up with an idea to reward her husband instead of herself directly. In all my time here, I don't recall seeing that before... what a good idea... As our quits progress, I guess the inspiration and information we look for changes. For the basics, I do think it's difficult to reinvent the wheel and while the same points may be said repeatedly, they are necessary for those that haven't seen it before. The ones that write regarding these things now will become tomorrows jewels. However, in looking for the "jewels" of the past, even though I may read the same points... some versions just speak to me better. In some posts, I've found little facts that I never knew before, or maybe I did know and had forgotten. That search feature is a jewel in itself during those times the forum is quiet or when you want to learn something specifically. Definitely worth the time! Reading posts here recently, it seems to me that we are running out of steam to be original or inventive in our philosophising and that is not surprising because all we are saying today has been said many times before by the very many great quitters who preceded us. There have been many very wise people on these boards before us and there a jewels of threads in the archive if only we were to look for them. Spend some time going back, you'll be surprised what wonders lie there and bring forward the ones you like so that we may all benefit from the wisdom of our predecessors.
