Can a non smoker ever understand?

17 years ago 0 104 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
It's only my 2nd day and my husband is already sick of my mood. He has never smoked in his life, all I did was snap at him under my breath and after 2 hour's sat in silence he's gone off to work (he work's shifts)i a strop and left me feeling as if it's all pointless. I shouldn't have snapped but I've spent all day keeping my cool with my children and remembering not to take it out on them. He was being really irritating lol. I know it's hard for him, he just seem's to think that I should be able to do this without being snappy or moody, he also think's that after 2/3 week's I will be a none smoker and it will all be over, I will be cured. He doesn't get it, if it was that easy I would of done it years ago. Well anyway, day 2 of my quit, I was feeling really good about it, now I'm sat in tears, Don't worry I'm not going to slip, as much as I may feel like a cig I cant get one from anywhere and I wouldn't anyway. Sorry for the moan, I just needed to get it off my chest.

Nobody can really know the feel of anyone else's moccasins. And we can't expect them to. I find I often come down hardest on those closest to me and it's really not fair. Education might help. Otherwise, his responses are his own. I will tell you one thing. I bet when he looks back on it, he will be amazed at the strength you have exhibited. Because experience is the best educator and when it is all said and done - then, he will have a better appreciation for the struggles you are winning today. No. They can't. Even my husband, who has 6 years sober, does not understand, and never will. I get that comment, are you STILL on the patches? Like, wow, I quit alcohol without no stinking patches..... So just be real, try to understand the addiction yourself, and be prepared for the bouts of emotion that sometimes make us a little (!) crabby. After all, we rarely said anything back when we smoked, we just went and covered our emotions with a smoke instead. In the last few months of this quit journey I have had to actually say something in response. And I've learned a lot about myself I never would have otherwise. But always remember this: Say what you mean, and mean what you say, but don't say it mean. It's truly something to strive for, since we have had no experience with saying something back in any manner, let alone a nice or polite or let's say assertive (rather than aggressive) way. So keep on kickin ash, we do soooo deserve the freedom. Hi Bullseye - I'm afraid Non-smokers just don't get it. I prepared my hubby by being cranky on a regular basis prior to my quit so it wasn't quite so hard on him. One time I asked if it bothered him when I was cranky. Apparently, there was a "Quit smoking" cranky and a "Regular" cranky. He preferred the "Quit smoking" cranky because it didn't have anything to do with him....but, as I was starting to get "cranky", he never did really explain what the difference was???? Hope the rest of your week goes better! Hey Bullseye, I am sorry you both left feeling cruddy. He is probably at work now feeling bad too. I know you are strong in your resolve...no matter how far away the store is! Go brush your teeth and breathe in some nice cool air. How about writing hubby a little love note for his pillow when he gets home...sometimes we have to teach them how to treat us???? Until yesterday when I discovered that I am a drug addict I couldn't have ever understood how a person could shoot herion into their own body. Heck I did it the easy way I just lit a cig! I have a non smoking hubby and even if he never smoked he has seen me on my previous attempt to quit rolled up in a little ball crying my eyes out. So, he may not know the feelings we go through but he sure does know it hurts. Have you talked to him about this yet? Communication is such a great thing! IN a word.."NO" a non smoker can never truly understand the addiction and and never really appreciate what you go through to quit. Dear Bullseye, you can talk about it till you are blue in the face. you can get your husband to read about withdrawal and quitting. But unless you have been through it, it is hard to comprehend. It is only us ex-smokers that understand, and that it part of the reason why this websie is so succesful. Good luck Bullseye just remember WE are here for you.
