broke my wrist,%#$@ cravings

exslave, I know it sucks, I am currently in a cast....(broken navicular bone..which is a little bone that basically joins the foot and the ankle.) Whatever you do, don't smoke. Have the doctor explain it to you, (it has to do with the oxygen level in the red blood cells which are a factor in healing the broken bone, but when you smoke the red blood cells don't bind with the oxygen, they bind with the carbon monoxide) with is super bad. The result is that sometimes the bone does not heel, or takes even longer. I have broken both writs, both ankles, and this time is my second brake on one of the ankles. Actually, this is kind of why I quit. I broke a toe 3 months ago cleaning my house and 2 months after that an ankle...so the doctors thought there was something wrong with me and ordered a bone density test. Came back that I was borderline for osteoporosis....the freak accidents that happened to me were really the best thing....otherwise I never would have known how the smoking was so damaging to my bones.... Hang in there, take calcium...don't smoke. And better a bone then a ligament....(they take longer to heal a lot of the time) oh and I use to train and show horses....(all the broken bones) I don't want anything to think I am a total complete klutz....tripping over my own feet ALL the time.;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 177 Amount Saved: $36.9 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 19 Mins: 0 Seconds: 33

Oh, Ex-Slave I'm so sorry to hear about your injury. Hope all goes well at the doc tomorrow. Whatever you do, don't let feeling sorry for yourself give you an excuse to let that nicodemon in. Stay strong and soon this will be one more non-smoking accomplishment for you. Even if it's a struggle, you still can read posts for support and inspiration. A lot of people seem to feel strongly about having cold water around to sip when that craving starts to creep up. You also might want to try licorice or gummy worms - they'll occupy your mouth and aren't too fattening. And you can use either hand for them, too! :) Stay strong! Look Ma, No Hands! Sorry, couldn't resist. 50+ you say? Kinda spunky arent' ya? I think It's time to get creative (after your wrist gets stabilized). Hummmm 6 weeks off and one good hand. The doctor didn't say you had to sit around the house, did he/she? I think you have a wonderful opportunity awaiting you. 148 days under your belt, your work has helped you get this far. Now you have a further developmental milestone to stay quit w/o relying on work to keep you disciplined. It will be completely on your own accord. This could be good. ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 487 Amount Saved: $240 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 14 Mins: 53 Seconds: 12

you're getting a lot of great responses. and pea - I have heard that before re: oxygen levels and healing and smoking. good point to bring up. I was wondering today Ex - which had did you smoke with? Assuming you smoked with our hand. Hi ex-slave - My first thought is that I'm glad that there are other people in this world that haven't grown up completely yet either. My second thought was that I was sorry you were gonna be stuck at home for 6 weeks - Smoking thoughts are pretty well non-existent during my work day...I have to admit that it's my down time that still challenges me. Clear does have a good point - This may be a great time to learn new skills. How to cope with down time and how many things you can actually do with one hand??? Perhaps we could start a thread about one handed activities to give you a boost. Good luck with the ortho doctor tomorrow. Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you're on the mend soon... Glad to hear you are resisting those cravings.... Keep up the good fight. BTW...we just took the training wheels off of the neighbor kid's bike, if you're interested.... :gasp: Uh-oh. Maybe I shouldn't have gone there! :8o: My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 161 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,079 Amount Saved: $1288 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 2 Mins: 39 Seconds: 20

Ex-slave, Sorry to hear about your fall! Ouch! Hang in there, your cravings may be coming on stronger because you now have nothing, like work, to keep your mind occupied. Time to find some great distractions and turn this negative into a positive. You can do anything you want! Take advantage! Pea, Yes, you are very right. Smoking does seriously affect bone health. Your bones are supplied with nutrients and oxygen via the bloodstream. When we smoke, our heart rate increases and our blood vessels constrict. This makes it harder for larger amounts of blood to flow through blood vessels and decreases your bones supply of all nutrients and oxygen found in blood. This is not only a contributor to the development of osteoporosis and fractures but it also greatly lengthens your healing time from these bone injuries. ex-slave, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I can't imagine having a broken wrist. I'm sitting here thinking of all the things you can't do, and the list keeps getting longer... I really like what Katy wrote, and you know that she is right. I need to do the same thing tonight. Take control, thanks Katy... Stay strong, I know that you won't smoke.... :) Keep in touch, and let us know how you are doing... thanks all, well, no good news on the wrist. i broke both bones and one of the bones is fractured into several pieces right at the hand joint. the ortho dr. said that the xray looked like a "bag of bones". i am going to the hand/wrist specialist at 8am monday. it will be like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, the dr said. this is making for a long weekend; just waiting to see if i have done any permanent damage or will lose any range of motion in my left hand. i will be having surgery, for sure. well, on a positive note, my med ins at work covers 100% of the surgery and i have lived to be 50+ years old and have never had to have surgery until now. AND, I AINT GONNA QUIT RIDING MY BIKE!...maybe, no more "S" curves; AND I AM NOT GOING TO SMOKE MY WAY THRU THIS STRESSFUL SITUATION. thanks for the support, the laughs, and the encouraging words.
