Monica, Your story hits way too close to home and I sincerely hope that you are feeling better and stronger in order to continue. You have come way too far to slip now. Mic

I just started my quit, but I've read a lot of posts and came across your dad's passing and you were very strong and everyone here seems to admire your strength and courage. You are a real inspiration to many people. Sometimes we go into a very bad place emotionally - you mentioned you are in a depression, and not that it's an excuse to slip, but hey, you have to cut yourself some slack and be gentle on yourself. So you had one cig.. by the sounds of it you are not smoking, simply taking a break from many things and as you said, reorganizing things. Take your time and when you're ready come back. As I said, these members here seem to really care an awful lot about you. Monica, So sorry I missed this as I have been on vacation and off work since last week and don't check this site as regularly as I should. Listen to me....and listen good...in the last few weeks you have literally been to hell and back again...I can't believe you didn't break sooner! Do NOT reset your quit meter. You had a weak moment and smoked.....big deal...but DO NOT do it again! You were looking for a way to get out of the "darkness", as you so put it. When we are in that place, we just want to feel better and are desperate to try anything. So you tried a smoke.....obviously it didn't work, so we/you need to come up with something else to perk you up. There may be no quick answer for this either. Sometimes (ecspecially with everything you have been through) only time and patience with yourself can bring you back from the darkness. Think about the things in your life that make you smile. Think about things you are looking forward to in the next few months. Anything happy and bright to lift your spirits. And make sure your treating yourself good and being patient with yourself....your so worth it!!!!! Rent a funny movie or uplifting movie. Buy an uplifting book. Stay away from things that make you upset or sad (like smokes). Surround yourself with positive things for the next few weeks, and try and look at the bright side of things instead of the negative (this may take extra effort given your current state). One day at a time Monica....You will make it through this. HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from your neighbor!!! Thanks everyone for all of your advice and support. I have not, since that slip, had any other slips. I was and in some ways still, in a very dark place. I appreciate the advice re the Chantix, but I'm doing well on the patch which I up'ed to 14 mg again as I stepped done to the 7 mg. I also understand that there's no reason to light up .. but I was really suffering and I guess .. well let's just say I gave in. Some would say .. that until you walk in another's shoes, experiencing exactly what they are going through one can never really understand the actions of another. Anyway, I haven't slipped again and I'm reorganizing many things here at home, especially where it comes to hubby, and also in other facets of my life. I'm going to get this pc revamped and a close friend of mine will take it away tomorrow and return it when he has a chance. Keep well all.. thanks again for your love and your concern. See you as soon as I get my pc back. I'm in an awfully foul mood.. and I know it (the post) Katy isn't by any means a scolding but .. like I said, I'm in a foul mood and I'm taking most things in a very bad way right now. I'm going to take some time off. Thanks to all for all that you've done for me - my appreciation comes directly from my heart, which has been filled with much angst, yet, much love and respect for everyone who has helped me. Thanks everyone. The walk did me some good and now, as some of you said, I should be gentle on myself so I'm going to take a long hot shower and then lay down for a bit. You've all been so supportive and I take your advice to heart. I won't change the quit meter and move forward as best I can. Much love and ((((((((hugs)))))))) Monica58 My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 54 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,091 Amount Saved: $486 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 22 Mins: 51 Seconds: 22

I've been having problems with Christmas. It's a long long story, but this is the jist of it -- I'm Jewish, my dad was Catholic. And many of you know that my dad passed away some weeks ago from lung cancer.. Anyway, with the Christmas season right on top of me now I've been feeling real blue. It got very bad 2 days ago to the point where I was in a very deep depression (and yes, I am already being treated for depression). I know smoking will not erase the hurt, the pain of losing someone you love and I was handling it pretty good, all things considered. Then BANG the depression got worse. I did all of my breathing exercises, I cried like an unending river flows and it just wasn't passing and when 36 hrs hit and my nerves could no longer stand it I went to my next door neighbour and got 2 cig's. I couldn't even come here to write because I couldn't really put it all into words... it was like a dam which had burst.. I was rambling on to my husband and most of the time I was hardly making much sense. He held me for long periods of time and the horrible feelings I was experiencing would not go away. He (my dad) and his family would be here today for Christmas eve dinner.. He missed all of my Hanukkah and I so miss him :( I only ended up smoking one of the two I borrowed and flushed the 2nd down the toilet. Today I'm feeling a bit better. I know many of you would have wished I came here to get support, but as I said above I wouldn't have known what to write as I barely knew myself what the right words would have been. Hubby was incredibly supportive.. :) I'm still feeling very on edge and have been using all the tools at my disposal ..I can't slip again. Since that one slip I've had more urges but haven't acted on them. Did the cig help.. no. In fact it turned my stomach. Do I still deserve to keep the quit meter at what it is >> 54 days quit and counting? I think yes, because it was only a small indiscretion and I should simply forgive myself of that and move forward. What do you think? Now I'm going to head out for a most refreshing walk outside to clear the cob webs...and there are so many. sorry for downer..needed to come clean. I'm sorry.. when I said I was going to take some time off I didn't mean that I would go back to smoking and that I gave up the quit. I am just needing some time away from things. I'm just going to re-organize many things here at home and especially inside my head and that's why I need to take time off ~ from everyday life. Enjoy your holidays everyone !
