Should I Worry

Thanks guys for all your info!! I really appreciate it. Maybe I never had the cough as I was so active. Last year I did some long hiking at Mt Rainer and never really felt winded too bad. I have always been known for my energy though this summer I got sick and they diagnosed it as SLE lupus..(connective tissue disease). I have had fibromyalgia for years. .. but only in flares. So...in lieu of that I got real serious about quiting. Not that I wasn't the other 50 times I tried. But I knew the poison in my body just had to stop!!...for good. I would never improve sucking in 4000 chemicals 20 times a day....7 days a week. I eat mostly organic now.... and buy my food at the nature center department. I am not fanatical...but I am more serious about my eating. Again.. thanks for the encouragement. Hi everyone, I am getting close to 4 weeks quit. I use about 3 to 4 pieces of 2mg gum a day. Most days are real good...but like everyone a few bad days mingled in. My question is....I am not coughing up any phlegm since I quit. Should I be? I never had a smokers cough before I quit. I have smoked for over 30 years and can't say I ever had a rattle when I laughed.... I had begun to notice when I smoked phlegm that sort of just came up...like clearing your throat and then swallowing. If I don't cough up phlegm does it mean I am not healing or it is not loosing up? I guess I will put my two cents in too! I used to cough alot when I smoked. I could not laugh real hard without coughing afterwards. The day I quit smoking I quit coughing. No lie. I have not coughed one time. It is weird. I just got over a sinus infection and still no cough! I never realized how bad cigarettes where affecting me. My husband tried to tell me but I always had an excuse as to why I was coughing so hard. Wow! I just realized how much healthier I am now! I wonder why some people hack that crap out then there are people like us who don't. Anyone have an answer for that????? Mercy: Well, I have the same exact story as Anna and Faithfreedom. I coughed when I smoked and if I laughed, that would trigger me to cough. My husband kept trying to tell me what was happening too but I just made excuses. Just like Anna and Faithfreedom, the day after I quit, no coughing at all. In fact, while I was smoking, a cough would wake me up during the night and especially if I got a little warm in my sleep. That stopped too as soon as I stopped smoking. Granted, I'm only in Day 12 now of my Quit so it may hit me later but so far, so good. I don't have the nasty stuff cough, but I have more of a need to clear my throat thing going on that I didn't have when I smoked. When I smoked, I had a dry hack and couldn't have a good belly laugh without coughing up a lung. The dry hack is gone, and I don't wake up in the night coughing anymore. YAY! I still cough a little if I start laughing really hard, but it's much better than before, and getting better all the time. I ran into a lady who quit smoking 15 years ago, and as we were talking about not smoking, I asked her about the coughing. She said she coughed for about a year, and it just slowly became less until it went away. Sounds to me like about anything is normal! Mercy: Anna wrote my story exactly. I had been developing a pretty bad smoker's cough/hack to the point of gagging and gasping. (Like you, Anna, I always had an excuse: oh, I swallowed the wrong way, etc. Yeah, right!). Anyway, literally from almost the first day I quit, I have NOT had a cough of any kind, let alone the awful ones I had been seeing on a regular basis. Like the others here, I had read some threads about this nasty cough some get and I couldn't be more thrilled that I seem to have escaped all that. So, I say "Congratulations" -- and don't worry a whit about it any more! Keep the faith and that wonderful quit of yours! Hi Mercy I never coughed up anything either. While I didn't have a full-fledges smoker's cough before I quit, the cough would hang on forever every time I got a cold....This winter no hacking coughs for me yet!! Woohoooo!
