Jame Don't let it get you down. You can't stop everything at once. If you like to drink, keep trying. So, you caved once. You had the nerve to stop smoking again the next day. That is good. I am one of the lucky ones who can mentally say "I don't smoke" and it helps clear my head. I can't chew gum and drink either. Of my 24 days off smokes I have been to the bar 22 of them. Just keep trying. Keep in mind how hard the first two days were and be determined not to go through that again. Face up to it, it is only a matter of time before the do-gooders will have smoking banned everywhere and you and I will have a jump on the non-quitters. We can secretely giggle while they suffer through mandatory quitting. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hey Jame, Now here's a different aproach to the whole cituation... What you did is exactly what happened to me the first time I tried to quit. Friends, alcohol , trying to avoid triggers, rather than dealing with them. This time, before I decided to quit, I did a ton of research. It turns out that some people do better when facing their triggers as early in thier quit as possible. So this time I had my morning coffee the day I quit. I had wine on the 3rd day. I got in a major fight on the 5th day. I just went through a 2 hour conversation with my mom-in-law, who's a heavy smoker, without lighting up. I'm not saying it's easy, I just think that not everyone does well by running away. Try to fight, it might be your way out. I wish you all the best! Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 16 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Jame, I too was one who had to smoke when I was drinking. I actually smoked more when I was drinking. Like a pack of cigs in the 4 or 5 hours I was there. Well I have still continued to go out with my group. The first night wasn't so bed. I took a pack of Big Red gum and popped in a piece whenever I thought about having cig. I think that I went through a whole pack of gum. But I didn't smoke. The other thing that helped my was to have someone there who knows that you have quit. For me it was my boyfriend. So every time the craving got real strong. I'd just tell him and we would talk about it. Well he would tell me no and I would tell him yes. By the time we were done talking about it my craving was gone. Hope this helps. Just keep in mind that you are an ex-smoker. You no longer smoke and you don't want to smoke. Not One Puff Ever! NOPE! Well, The Birthday party is in three more days. I feel that I really do have to go, No one cares that I have quit smoking, So I can't say, Sorry I can't go to your husbands Birthday party, cause I just quit smoking. Also, I have quit smoking about ever winter for the past 3-5 winters (I just don't like to be cold) and when I go outside in the summer, It brings back old habits fast. So every time I tell a family member I've quit, Instead of getting the pat on the back I was expecting, All I am getting is ridacole.. Is that the right word ??!! Everyone just says, How long this time.. Or yeh, That's going to last long. you know, The normal, Whatevers.. I will definitly be back here, and let you know if I smoke Sat., But, I have already made up my mind, I can't, I don't, and I can enjoy a drink without smoking.. The two do not go together any longer.. And honestly, This is the first time I have gone out since my birthday in Oct. I really only get to go out about 3-5 times out of the year, and I really need to get out and hang around with old friends, So there is no way I would miss this. (I am a housewife with a 6 and 8 year old.. I need to get out when I can !) By the way.. I did start out positive, I took two packs of gum, and was chewing insainly, But the gum affected the way my cosmos and margarittas tasted. . . So I spit the gum out.. and ket drinking more and more, and a friend of mine smokes my old brand, and I smoked his, Luckly he only had like 6 or 7, So I only got three or four, I think I smoked three of his and one of my husbands.. But I did go on with good spirits, and I am not proud of myself the way I know I would feel if I got threw it. . So next time.. I will make it, and I just won't go out until I am ready.. Well, I went out to the party, Which turned into Bar scene afterwards.. I have to say, It was very hard, So hard that I did give in.. I don't have the desire to smoke sober, But when I am drunk, It's like who cares, I'm drunk.. So give me a smoke.. I think I smoked like three or four, But I feel sort of bad, But not really, cause I have always done this.. But I am just not going to drink anymore for a really long time, I am starting a diet today, and a workout program (Hopefully I can stay on it ), I have gained 9 lbs of the 12 that I lost on weight watchers... I am right back where I started.. It sucks !! So I am done with smoking.. I hate to have to gain ten lbs everytime I quit, and the influence it is on my kids, and I have decided I am done.. I guess I just can't drink !! Ever.. lol.. Oh, And I am so sorry, For all that you were right to say to not go, But I just couldn't not go, and I don't feel like anything has been wounded.. I just had a drunk slip, And it would'nt have happened sober.. I do think if I would've drank at home first, Without smokers around me, And in a place I don't smoke.. and without my brand sitting right beside me.. Then I could do it, Next time.. I will try it here first, The bar scene was just to back to the old.. Yeh, I was really going to have a smoke at first, Because I have never drank without smoking, and this would have been the first, But everyone here talked me out of wanting to.. But I just gave in around everyone... I have learned from it, But gum, and drinking.. ughh.. not a good mix, I even had two flavors and they were not going well.. By the way, I only do go out about 4 times out of the year, And I wasn't about to give up a night out without my kids and with my husband just because I couldn't handle it. So there will be no more going out's until summer,. By then I should have this thing kicked. hopefully.. O.K., Maybe it's just an excuse I always had, But I have never had a few drinks without having a few cigarettes to go with it.. Sometimes, When I wasn't smoking, I would buy a pack to go out, and give them away at the end of the night.. That usually worked..I am already stressing about this, and it's not for another week away. I really want an opinion.. If the craving hit's when I'm having a few drinks, [and it will!] Can I give in ? Or maybe I should refrain from drinking at all.. (I only get to ever go out about 4 times a year).. So I would like to enjoy myself...I have realized that first times are the worse.. My at home cravings have sustained, But when I am in a situation for the first time since not smoking, It all comes back. I went to my mom's last weekend.. I had to eat every three minutes, and I didn't even used to smoke that much, I also bit my nails so bad they hurt! Y cravings have stopped a good bit while I am at home.. But acne is still very bad, and I've NEVER had a face look like this. I honestly don't even want to leave my house.. I started working out to relieve stress, I hope that helps my face ! Thanks for all the support.. O.K. I admit it, I was going to smoke, Because it's the perfect excuse, and I would have the chance just for one night, And my husband, who is still a smoker will be there.. Actually there will be more smokers there then there will be non.. So since it's a bar, You are allowed to smoke there.. Crap! But honestly, The smoking/drinking is the reason I have started BACK up every time.. I GET it,, an acholohlic can't have a drink, and we can't have a puff ! I will pick up some gum, and this will be the first time I will not smoke with my margarittas !! Thanks.. (The Party is a surprise 30th for my brother in Law.. on the 27th. Just Gum for me!! Maybe I'll just take some pretzels along too.. That would be great!! Jame- When is your party? Be sure to let us all know and we will stay with you in spirit!! You can't smoke, N.O.P.E. Don't even give yourself an option.. My birthday party was 6 days into my quit and it was at bar also. All my friends knew that I was quitting and supported me! No one smoked all night around me at all! I thought about the friends I had made here and it helped me get through the night smoke free! Good luck and keep up posted -Rhonda My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 18 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 556 Amount Saved: $108 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 18 Mins: 15 Seconds: 35
