Long Thanksgiving Weekend Advice

17 years ago 0 983 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
As Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away, and there are quite a few new quitters, I would be very interested in advice from those of you that have been through major holidays, and coping techniques for trigger's and cravings that we newbies maybe aren't anticipating. Your insight is invaluable to us. I'm with you Phill...I am not shying away from situations where there is smoke. I am not seeking it either, however I was talking to a guy the other day and he lit up outside of my work as were talking. It wasnt a problem, the smoke smelled ok at best, but after he was done whew, dam he wreaked! I wondered is that what I smelled like after burning one? It was bad, very bad! I dont want to smell like that ever again!! ---Kevin My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 275 Amount Saved: $59.8 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 22 Mins: 52 Seconds: 15

Sorry Kait, I haven't gone through a holiday yet. But I can give you some advice. Just ask me, I always have an opinion! I think you can worry yourself too much about what may or may not happen in this or that situation, and frighten yourself silly if you do so. The "what if" string is quite long (I can run that string for days) but if you just prepare yourself with your own coping skills, ie take along your water and hard candies and gum and such, you will be just fine. If you feel threatened at any time, do please by all means go for a walk. Walking is one of the most effective stress reducers of all. And don't forget to breathe. One of the doctors at work taught me "four square breathing". You inhale to the count of four, you hold it in to the count of four, you exhale to the count of four, then hold it out to a count of four. Repeat this four times. By the time you are done, the crave or the stress has dissipated (and there is sound physical reason for this which I wont go into...aren't you glad?) and it's really impossible to think of anything else when you are counting your breaths or counting while holding it. Honest. Hang in there, you are doing great with your 13 days. Tough call this one. I have problems with those of you that avoid situations where you may smoke . For example if you enjoy a couple of drinks with friends and they smoke so what? If you sit at home and mope it can only be worse.Make quitting part of your normal routine.I have not changed a thing in 100 plus days! My advice do everything you always have and just dont smoke but dont forget to reward yourself! Kaitilina, This will be my first holiday. It helps that my inlaws do not smoke. I also do not have to cook, so that is another advantage. Cooking stresses me out, especialy for that many people. However I will still keep my self busy. I am big on sweets as rewards, so there will be plenty of rewarding myself. ;p. My hubby smokes, I just stay away from him. I do not dare go out unless I feel up to it. My kids are big motovation for me. Plus I think I am fortunant because I hate smoking, hate the smell and everthing about it. That really does help to not smoke.. I will assume that you are talking about being around smoky people during the Thanks Giving holidays. 1) When you arrive, let your family and friends know that you have quit smoking. 2) If possible arrive later rather than earlier. 3) If tempted, get up and get busy with something else. 4) If the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Excuse yourself, leave the party, everyone will understand. 5) Dont drink alcohol. 6) Hang out as much as possible with non-smokers. 7) If people smoke indoors go outdoors some. 8) If people smoke outdoors, dont join them. 9) Feel good about yourself, others will when they see you mean to stay quit. I have found that people really respect a person who has quit smoking. They feel that you must have tremendous will power to be able to accomplish the quit; they are just proud of you. 10) Bring along and be aware of your coping skills; they have gotten you to where you are today. 11) And the bright side; you may find that being around others takes your mind off smoking. 12) Enjoy yourself, have a great Thanks Giving

Well, the only major holiday I have been through since I quit was party 4th of July. It was tough considering I quit June 7th so I wasn't even a month into it. I just avoided the situation as much as I could. Thank God for rain (ha ha) so the fesitivies got damp. But I would occupy myself with my kids and just remember why I'm doing this. Print out anything that's encouraging or inspiring and keep it handy. Keep some gum or sugar free candies in your pocket. Don't get too stressed or too tired. If you do, excuse yourself, even if it's for only 5 minutes, and take a break. Use the breathing exercises Parrotlady suggested and any other relaxation techniques you know of. If you're having guests that smoke and you find it difficult to have smokers in your home, set up a "smoking station" outside or in a garage where you won't be exposed. As your guests arrive, let them know that an area has been designated. Make it comfortable by including some chairs and ashtrays. Even as a smoker, I was never offended if someone didn't allow smoking inside their home and besides, it's quickly becoming the "norm" in all places. Look at the craves as something positive to experience. Every time you short circuit one, you're making progress in reprogramming your brain... and that will make similar situations in the future easier to handle. Have a Happy Thanksgiving :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 656 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,133 Amount Saved: $2341.92 Life Gained: Days: 69 Hrs: 12 Mins: 43 Seconds: 41

Kait, This is a great thread to start and the members can certainly help. Always have coping mechanisms on hand to keep those craves at bay. Gum,candy, chew stick or even water may help. Take the initiative and play games at thanksgiving. This will keep you and everyone else occupied. Your turn members... Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
