Well, I don't know anything about cognitive therapy but this is the way I think. And I do also think that this is why I don't have many problems with my quit. I read all the posts here and I want to tell other quitters that if they can change the way they think, it's easier for them. Maybe they feel better that way.
I think the same way you do Dutch. But many other people don't think that way (positively) or do not want to think that way. And personally, I don't think it will help people unless they can learn how to think this way, which is why I brought up cognitive therapy. It takes more than just a flip of a switch, or you or me telling people to approach their way of thinking differently. Cognitive therapy can teach people the skills needed so that they can approach the way the think differently. Your way of thinking may come naturally for you. It doesn't come naturally for a lot of others. I was just trying to help the ones that it does not come naturally for, so that if they were interested in learning a new thinking/coping skill ... they have somewhere they could get started. My apologies if I offended you in anyway Dutch ... that sure was not my intention. My intention was only to help someone if I could. Yep, what we think makes us feel how we feel. We control what we think, therefore we have a huge amount of influence regarding how we feel. This is pretty much the basis for cognitive therapy. If you are having a hard time quitting, if you are feeling negative or depressed. I highly urge you to get 'The Feeling Good Handbook' by Dr. Burns. It can help you to approach your way of thinking differently. If applied to your life it will change it for the better. And you will feel happier just by learning how to change your thinking/attitude. Great post Dutch. I agree! It is not 'what' is going on around us, it is 'how' we percieve what is going on! If we look at things as positive things then it is easier to be at peace with it!! Dutch, You are absolutely correct. And may I mention that it is only up to ourselves to make this happen. You CHOOSE to be dwell in misery, or you CHOOSE to embrace the challenge. Change your thoughts people ~ it will lead you in a different direction. Enjoy the ride! I love it!! 4my2girls My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 223 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,719 Amount Saved: $729.21 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 0 Mins: 31 Seconds: 0

4my2girls and Dutch,, So correct! We bring to life what we choose and we bring to our Quits what we believe to be true, about ourselves and about others... Those who see themselves as powerless in life, will feel the same in their Quits - if one owns their own power, they will find the Quit journey easier and sweeter... If you dwell on the negative, it will fill you up... and the positive will bring Light... We have amazing power, folks... Own it! GREAT POST it does work to, if you tell yourself something or allow neg thoughts it makes you feel negative. Kind of like re training your brrain about smoking. I think of a cig and just tel myself nah you don't smoke and poof, it's gone. The thought does not linger much farther. It's kind of fun but have to crush the negative thought right away before it takes hold and creates feelings. I so believe what we think will manifest in what we feel. Not that I can get it together to be observant enough every time. Yet it certainly seems to be helpful. We have choices. All the way around. Nice post Thanks Fini...aloha Nalu My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 182 Amount Saved: $45 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 20 Mins: 45 Seconds: 13

Great post, Dutch. An excellent reminder that WE are in control of ourselves, nothing else. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 436 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,727 Amount Saved: $1656.8 Life Gained: Days: 81 Hrs: 8 Mins: 18 Seconds: 47
