Why I Didn't Quit Sooner?

18 years ago 0 1450 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
This one is easy for me Chris. I didn't realize smoking was an addiction and so my attempts at quitting were just that 'attempts'. Once I realized "what" I was actually dealing with (addiction) I began researching smoking cessation and "Knowledge is Power." I learned how to quit. I tell others "I outsmarted my addiction." I wish I would have researched sooner. Most of us grew up thinking it was just a 'bad habit'. Hey Cobenfan. I wonder too why I didn't quit sooner. I tried a few times but I guess the time just wasn't right for me. I am another one of those "don't tell me I can't" kind of people. When someone says I can't do it I will do it just to prove them wrong. Maybe someone should have said "you can't quit smoking". :) One thing I noticed, after I quit, was that I totally blocked out all the negative things about smoking. Coughing was always sinus stuff or a cold, I never saw the quitting commercials on TV, and people who wanted me to quit just didn't understand how good that cigarette was. I didn't want to quit. Then I decided I wanted to quit but couldn't. I had the fear of not succeeding among other things. It took about six months of thinking about it, praying about it and concentrating on how to quit before I finally said...OK.. This is it. I am going to do it. Golferman is always talking about the commitment strength, determination and attitude it takes to quit. He is so right. Until you have all these things, you just aren't ready. Of course, the SSC is what REALLY makes the difference. Christine, Why didn't I quit sooner? Great question!! Yes, you have to want the quit. And until that days comes, nothing anyone says will make any difference. I have forwarded the link to the SSC to several smokers. So far, nothing. As a former smoker I do try to educate the smokers without sounding preachy. It's tough because I am so damn enthusiastic about my quit! Fear is probably the greatest personal motivator for individuals to finally quit. We fear getting ill from it. We fear the loss of control in our lives, realizing we are a slave to a dried up piece of plant matter. Then we fear the quit inself as the "unknown" is such a scary place without our crutch. Hi Cobenfan, I probably didnt quit sooner because of fear of failure, the "need" of addiction, etc. On days that Im down on myself I believe I didnt quit because I WAS DUMBER THAN A BRICK. On those days I have to remember that regret doesnt do a thing for you. Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. The sages do not consider that making no mistakes is a blessing. They believe, rather, that the great virtue of man lies in his ability to correct his mistakes and continually make a new man of himself. Wang Yang-Ming Here's to a bright new future for us all. Not cravin', never cavin'.
