Why did we start in the first place?

My mother smoked after dinner every night and she thought it would be cool if I joined her. I did smoke secretly before that but she didn't know. She smoked havy cigarets and gave me one. Boy I got really sick and all. Wish I was wiser then...lol xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 207 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,189 Amount Saved: 610.65 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 13 Mins: 16 Seconds: 49

I started at 18 ,I had no intention of smoking, I worked part time for the phone co and I wouldn't take the breaks cause I didn't smoke and everyone went into the smoking room, my supervisor told me you have to take the breaks that we negociated with the union, if you don't we will all loose the priveledge. So on I went with the guys to the smoking room and the rest is history. So the union started me smoking it's their fault , see , unions are no good LOL :|Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 134 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,018 Amount Saved: $536 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 17 Mins: 58 Seconds: 21

Stupidity got me started. I too had a "smoking lounge" in high school and would meet friends there between classes. I didn't smoke for awhile and then I said "might as well smoke while I'm here". That was when I was 14. Addiction must've set in really early as I don't remember ever giving myself a choice to smoke or not smoke after that. That was 27 years ago. 4my - Wish you could relive those days with the knowledge and confidence you have today. Same as Phil, I suppose. I was 12 when I started smoking regularly. Earlier I remember rolling rabbit tobacco in dried leaves, smoking it and getting sick as a dog! Parents smoked, friends smoked, it made me 'cool'! Teenage years spent in Europe-no age limit to purchase and my American High School had a smoking area for students! Smokes went along GREAT with that German beer and Turkish hash :eg: A child of the 60's.... Now, as parents we complain about the total lack of respect for authority and the immoral behaviors of our youth... HELLO........WE created these monsters with our 'free love', Volkswagons and agnostic ways! BTW, I think I saw a lot of YOU guys at Woodstock as well! :8|: My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 47 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,373 Amount Saved: $376 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 21 Mins: 13 Seconds: 10

So true, Cybr.... I remember the Marlboro man...handsome cowboy...always had a cigarette in his mouth and portrayed as a real outdoorsman full of health and vigor! That's what the ads in the 60's and 70's presented. I guess we KNEW smoking couldn't be good for you, but all the advertisement contradicted that....

I started when I was 13. Peer pressure, insecurity. It is so important that as parents we work very hard with our children to make sure they have firm foundations and are secure in who they are and what they are about. Great thread Phil! I remember one day when I was in the 6th grade. We were in the corner of the schoolyard, after school, and I was with about 6 friends. They all lit up their cigs, but me and one other person did not. At that time, I had no interest in smoking. My father smoked, and I remember hating it!!!!! Anyhow, all of a sudden my teacher comes walking out of the classroom, and of course, all of my friends bailed and ran as fast as they could. Me and my one other friend who did not smoke, did not run. We had nothing to hide from. My teacher brought us up to the office, and our parents were called. They threatened to suspend us, but as we stuck to our story that we did not smoke, all they could do is give us detention. The ones who did smoke got off scott free, as they ran away, and I did not give out names............... My next memory, is of me smoking at the age of 13. I do not remember the first, or the second, or even the first 100. I do remember just smoking. I would steal them from my dad. I know that I started smoking because of lack of self esteem and the fact that I was totally harrassed at school because I called someone a bit**. I was so harrassed, that I had to switch schools. That started it all. I got in with the wrong crowd. I knew no one at that new school. So, I started smoking. I started a lot of other things, and that good, well spirited girl went away. All because I said someone was acting like a bit**. Oh my. I still have hard feelings towards that. I know for a fact that I would have not started smoking if I could have controlled my mouth, and not have switched schools. Those friends in the 6th grade, went on to not smoke. They were just expirimenting. So I had no friends that smoked. Until I went to another school............. That is my story. I have smoked for 21 years. After highschool, I was a pack a day. After I had my first daughter, I was 2 packs a day. I stayed that way until March 5th, 2006. ;) 4my2girls What Consumes Your Thoughts Controls Your Life My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 234 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,035 Amount Saved: $765.18 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 20 Mins: 51 Seconds

I started because at one point in my life I was easily fooled. Smoking was glamorous and cool and associated with all kinds of healthy outdoor activity and fun. HA! LIES LIES LIES!!!!!! We all grow up and learn. I did and I quit. I wont be lied to any more. Cigarettes are harmful and will kill you in the end. Any enjoyment they bring is momentary and in the long run, you pay for that enjoyment with your life. That is not a good deal or a fair trade. I guess there's just no ROI (return on investment)in smoking. I guess I finally figured that out.
