No one quits "smoking", you break an "addiction"

The county I live in went smoke free about 1.5 years ago. The is a locally owned establishment that refuses to abide by the new laws. They are fined continuously for their negligence. Their patrons fully help support the amount of the fines. They say it is worth the higher prices in order to be able to have the "freedom" to smoke. Sad huh? Golferman, Exactly the point of the news story. You know how it is with the "Good Ole Boys" in the South. Give them about 10 years to catch up. Sad, but true. In this town there is a lot of bickering and not much action. Sort of like a smoker sitting on the quit fence :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 472 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,450 Amount Saved: $1652 Life Gained: Days: 41 Hrs: 15 Mins: 26 Seconds: 23

The title says it all. Smoking is not a choice. At least not after you become a smoker. The only choice you had was whether to start smoking. After that the addiction to nicotine takes over. My community (Louisville, Kentucky) just passed a tougher smoking ban. Effective July 1, 2007, smoking will no longer be permitted in any public building, bar, restaurant, etc. The only exception is Churchill Downs race track where they run The Kentucky Derby. The bar owners didnt like that and now they want to sue. But I digress. This post is about addiction to nicotine. When the local newspapers website ran this story people could post comments to it. One person wrote about smoking being a choice and defended a smokers right to smoke. This person claimed to be a former smoker who was quit for 9 years. Obviously I had to reply and explain how addiction to nicotine works. ;p But you know, there are too many people who truly believe that smoking is a choice. I suppose there are a few smokers who are not addicted to nicotine. Of course you have the never smokers who are clueless. Im a firm believer in having a proper perspective when trying to do anything, but especially breaking the addiction to smoking. New quitters often beat themselves up for a slip or with struggling. Ive got news for them... breaking the addiction to smoking is a lot easier said than done. Of course its not impossible, as is evidenced by all the great quitters here, but it just isnt a lot of fun. So the next time someone makes a silly comment to you about your quit and that you should be over it by now, remind them that smoking is not a choice, but an addiction to nicotine and that you are doing your best. That is perspective. Then you can slap them and blame it on the withdrawals. :p Be Strong. Be Smart. Jan58, I wish they had that 9 meter (29.53 ft.) rule here in the states. The 4 losers, er, smokers, left at my company stand right in the doorway and half the time the smoke blows back inside. What gets me about Canada is how anyone can even afford to smoke! Just shows you how strong this addiction is.. who needs food? Just leave me enough money for smokes! Best wishes on your quit today! Lady, If the county really wanted to stop the smoking there, they would yank their liquor/business license. After 1.5 years, it's time to stop letting them off with a slap on the wrist. Phil.. I love my American Heritage dictionary.. :p Be Strong. Be Smart. How great is it that, upon my return, the first post I see is classic G-man. :) I've said it before, and I'm gonna say it again: The media needs to start comparing nicotine addiction to cocaine, heroin, and meth addictions. It is a grave injustice and disservice to not do so. I don't mean the "don't smoke" and "talk to your kids" soft sell. I mean something like mainlining tobacco, like the graphic I think G-man has posted from time to time. Some people have easy quits. Mine was relatively easy. Others have had it easier than I have. Good for them! But many have had it much, much worse. Some just weren't prepared to quit. Others had other issues the nicotine masked. Recognition and acceptance of those issues are key to helping make their quit successful. It's really hard to fight two overlapping battles at once, especially if you don't realize you're fighting more than one. Those folks need our help as much, ... no, more ... than the rest. You can't treat the addiction and ignore the ancilliary problems. People are complex [u]systems[u] and need to be handled as such. Phil, the brain/finger disconnect is a well known, if not often mentioned, side effect of quitting. :p Congrats on 68 smoke-free days. Keep up the great quits, everyone. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 511 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,231 Amount Saved: $1941.8 Life Gained: Days: 95 Hrs: 8 Mins: 48 Seconds: 8

Whether smoking or not, if you want to be quit, you have to make a choice....many, many, many times over. Oh, yes, and I think it is an option too. It's a choice! thanks golferman. i agree with you - smoking is not a choice, especially when you are in active addiction and are smoking. a choice becomes available when you quit. you can either stay on the road to better health or go back to killing yourself. unfortunately the illness is always there, waiting to pounce and get you to pick up - building a defence against the first cigarette and surrounding yourself with supportive friends and non-smokers is a great way to beat the demon.
