Dry Throat, Mouth Sores.....Part of Withdrawals??

18 years ago 0 2838 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
You know, I had smoked for 34 years, 3 packs a day, and i never had that brown crud either (thank goodness). I've heard others talk about it and still other say it is part of the healing process. I think I have missed all that (perhaps I'M not normal?) But just like you, I have had such a dry throat with my quits-almost a raw feeling. Never sores in my mouth, though. However, excessive sunflower seed consumption has caused me a sore tongue or two! :) Have a happy and successful quit...it can be done!

Leolibra, A small number of smoker's experience mouth irritations when they cut down or quit smoking. The cause is related to chemical adjustments that are taking place in your mouth. For years your mouth has had to withstand repeated assaults with hot cigarette smoke. Your tissues are adjusting and healing. How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting. Tips to help: Use topical treatment for mouth sores. If you experience sores for longer than a few weeks, consult your doctor. You should also practice good oral hygiene. This will keep the sore from getting infected and causing you further problems. Avoid really spicy, sour or salty foods. Make sure what your eating isn't too hot or cold. Hope this helps, Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

Leolibra, I think mouth irritations are pretty common. If you do a search on mouth sores (here on the site), you'll find threads about them. There are some products in the toothpaste section at the pharmacy that work pretty well. I've also heard that some pharmacists will make up a potion out of peroxide and some other stuff...Miracle Mouthwash or Magic Mouthwash. I still get them now and then...seem to take about five days to go away.
