Just One Puff

Great post Lady! I know for me, I always thought that after a certain amount of time, I could be a social smoker and smoke "occasionally." That is what ruined my quit time after time after time. Realizing that we are nicotine addicts and cannot ever smoke "just one" is the most important realization to staying quit. Thanks for the reminder! Crave the Quit! Your title could have scared me, I knew it was impossible not Lady, I know also I can never touch the poison again and I don't want to, life is full of ups and downs and we have to learn to deal with it without smoking. I find ,I am way calmer since I stopped. I now weight things instead of feeling panic right away I weight the pros and cons and I stand back and then take action. It's such a great feeling to be in control of your emotions. And the other great feeling is deep breathing. It can be done one day at a time. Thanks for your post Lady :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 57 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 864 Amount Saved: $228 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 14 Mins: 18 Seconds: 23

Lady, Thank you for sharing you thoughts and your experience. Obviously, this train of thought has done you well! 404 days and still going strong! Just one puff can throw you back into withdrawals. For many, that's how they got their start. They took just one puff. Danielle _________________________ The SSC Support Team

Marie.. don't think for one moment that I am any different than anyone else on these boards for I am not. I am one puff away just like the rest of you. I am not in control of my emotions. I am still learning to live my life without the crutch. I live it one day at a time and I still take one step at a time. The point is I am learning. There are times that I am ready to throw it all away. It doesn't matter how long you are quit. There will always be situations that get you down and make you want to run for the old comfort zone. The difference is that you realize that smoking won't solve a thing. You realize that the only thing smoking will do for you is send you back to square one and lead to a slow miserable death. Wether we have been quit for one day or one million days doesn't matter. We see people all the time that give in to that Just One Puff after months and even years of being quit. We need to always be aware of our addiction and to protect our quits at all costs. It just gets easier to do and we start to reap the benefits of being smoke free. My freedom from the enslavement of smoking is precious to me. Addiction: Habitual psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control. (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) Nicotine: A colorless, poisonous alkaloid derived from the tobacco plant and used as an insecticide. Once I realized that my smoking was more than a bad habit, I began to view it in a different light. I am a nicotine addict. Just as an alcoholic cannot have another drink, or a heroin addict cannot have another fix, I cannot have another puff. Not One Puff Ever (NOPE) is a serious commitment that I have made to myself. I am aware that if I ever have one puff I will be a smoker again. It doesnt matter how long we are quit; one day, one month, one year or ten years. One puff awakens the addiction and if I take that puff, I am a smoker again just as one drink awakens the alcoholic, and one fix awakens the heroin junkie. Addiction ruins our lives and keeps us from being productive, healthy adults. This includes smoking. I am amazed at the control smoking had on my life. I use to be afraid to quit and think it was too hard and just not worth it. Quitting is hard but it is doable and it is worth every bit of agony you may be going through now. So grab a hold of NOPE and hang on tight.
