Stress Management 101 Pass or Fail

Sooo much going on and so busy. Lots and lots and lots of stress! I wish I could control the machinations of my mind. I know I don't want to smoke, I know I have resolved not to smoke. My mind however keeps going to whatever was in the smoke that told me everything was okay or that I was relaxed. I know I would have smoked a lot, I mean a lot, during stress like this. I have to say that I need to constantly remember to breath and be very vigilant of those I hang out with. I come very close to asking for a smoke when I am near the smell. For a few moments I will think of smoking and then I will be able to clutch back my senses and get back to my commitment. I wonder why this happens to some and not to others? I have been swimming a lot and yet there is not a whole lot of relaxation cause there is so much going on. In the stress I get close to the thought of smoking. Oh well just thought I would post this here. I know I won't smoke and my mind keeps going there. What a lot of effort to remain firm in my resolve. Give myself a year of life smoke free and take it from there. Yes I am actually working to deal with the stress with relaxation techniques and carrying out new and different pusuits that are of interest and rewarding to me. This week there just happens to be a lot of events coming together to create a lot more stress than usual. Part of dealing with the overwhelm is to come here and post. Thanks. I'm not sure mind over matter is always the answer...but being stubborn as a mule sure helps me :p As long as you're doing something to replace the physical act and the mental thoughts of smoking...(and only you can decide what that "something" is) then your brain is learning that smoking or thinking of smoking, is no longer the answer... stubbornly at first... but it eventually learns. So, your brain is encountering this new stress level as a non-smoker and it's trying to do the only thing it's known to do for years..."But wait! You are SO stressed...we need to..." And when you respond with, "No, we do THIS now...", I would think that brain of yours is kicking up a little dust and rebelling. Mine did. But...What a great sign that your strategy is working and changes are taking place. Next time, maybe it won't shout so loudly. I think you're doing a great job. :) N.O.P.E. G'mornin' Rman :) I reckon everyone can relate to stress. It's just one of those "life things"... But, we're each so very different. How we handle it becomes the issue as we tackle this addiction and retrain our brains. You said your mind goes back to "whatever was in the smoke that told you everything was okay and that you were relaxed". Well, we might as well call a duck a duck, right?... it was the nicotine relieving your withdrawals...which probably came every few minutes under stress. Unfortunately, it left you with a false sense of dealing with the issues instead of allowing you to truly deal with it unmedicated. You are showing such strength, determination, resolve...willpower which is good... but wow, how absolutely exhausting to do that for the long term, huh? We're in control now, not our addiction. We may not be pros at handling these things yet but we will be with practice. Other than swimming (simply because we can't do that all the time), are you actively searching to replace smoking when dealing with stress or being near other smokers? Do you have a new and improved strategy? We have to learn those new ways and break those mind associations and we have to do it over and over and over until our minds don't wander back to smoking and gives in to our new strategy. By all means, give yourself that year...and at the end of that year, if you need it, give yourself another 2 months. Take the long way home... Eventually, you'll get there. :) N.O.P.E. Now that brings backs some memories I'd not thought of for a while! I've spent sent several nights in oxygen tents holding my little ones (that aren't little anymore) while they had severe asthma and bronchitis... both very scary conditions. I'd be soaked with the mist by morning. Their medications were also administered with a nebulizer that creates a mist to be inhaled as well. I hope asthma isn't your diagnosis but it would sure explain a panic feeling for those times you can't get enough air. Living in the south, it can tough even for us natives to breath this heavy, humid air...but I think it helps mostly people that have problems with build up in their lungs... it keeps the congestion thinned. Thanks for the info... Rman, Just curious, do the breathing exercises help make the scar tissue more flexible or does it just force more air flow by breathing differently? Oddly enough, we have people move to our area FOR the humidity to help with breathing. (can't say that it does much for the hair though). River, What about relaxation techniques before bed? This can help ease you into sleep and refresh you for tomorrow. Your determination is outstanding and you already know you can do this. You will not throw away those 208 days for a little stress. We know that smoking even just one cannot make the stress or situation go away.
