Panic Attacks

17 years ago 0 45 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Sharon, Relax. Don't give the panic attacks any thought. They are created because your mind thinks you are in physical harm and is reacting. The mind however creates this madness. I can tell you first hand as I use to suffer from them all the time and especially in nervous situations. I did learn not to be afraid of them. Just relax, breath and very important don't stop doing things in fear it will come back. Yes you should tell your doctor, but don't take meds unless it is out of control. You may never have one again and the phase is over. Hang in there and KEEP QUIT! I am proud of you. Marianne

Just bumping this to comment on using herbal remedies. I've had a bottle of Kalms on me the past three days and have taken one or two right when I start to feel edgy. Worked like a charm. I recommend anyone try who's really finding it hard to find serenity! I got them before my quit and worse now in my quit and the only thing I have found that works to to close my eyes....take big deep breathes....focus on my heart and think of it slowing down and easing up and just breath, breath, breath (slow). Good luck and hang in there, it does get better with time. I went through a period of anxiety attacks in my life. I went to counseling for it and that helped and I didn't end up taking any medication for it. But the main thing that I learned and am still learning about is that diet and excersize are probably the single biggest key to stopping anxiety attacks for me. In order of importance, for me, what I eat is number one in importance, then the excersize. I read a book called "potatoes not prozac" and it talks a lot about the fact that if you eat too many "quick calories" such as would be found in sugar or white flour, it sets up a bad brain chemistry cycle. Caffeine and nicoteine both make this even worse. Stressful situations make it worse, too, of course. I am far from a paragon of good nutrition, but if you eat a lot of quick calories and are a caffeine fiend like I am known to be, your body just eventually loses its robustness and crashes. Read the book, though. I think our tendency is to think that all we need is some sort of pill or something but in my own experience, eating and drinking the right stuff is far better than any pill. Obviously, my opinion, and I'm no doctor (disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer... yada yada yada) Take care, post often, The QM My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 156 Amount Saved: $28 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 4 Mins: 9 Seconds: 42

Hi Sharon - A Doctor's advice is always a good idea. I have a very mild prescription for Lorazepam (which I use may 4 times per year - probably expired by now!) I rarely have to use it but for me, knowing that it is there, helps me to relax and let the feelings of anxiety pass. I have absolutely NO medical training but I believe that the best way to deal with panic attacks is to prevent them by engaging in relaxing activities such as yoga, walks, massage or anything else that reduces your stress. Deep breathing prior to entering a stressful situation helps to prevent the likelihood of them happening. Actually, a panic attack doesn't have to be that serious...I think they just feel awful because we feel so out of control when they happen. If they are situation specific, a doctor or counsellor could help you to learn how to gradually deal with these situations. I think that those of us who are prone to experience "panic" attacks tend to run on a higher anxiety level then others. When we encounter stress, we react like someone else might react if a bear just jumped out at them! Whatever we can do to reduce our general anxiety level will reduce the likelihood of them happening. Hope this helps a little....and I hope that your Doctor has good advice! Yes...talk to your Doctor!!! I was having them bad after my quit and the Doc helped me out. I was having anxiety and panic attacks they are very hard to deal with. But I was not giving up my quit. Smoking was my answer to everything stress, happy, sad, you name it. I smoke more that half of my life you have to learn a whole new way to cope. It is so worth every breath. Good luck and take care of you!!! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/21/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 63 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,591 Amount Saved: $220.5 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 2 Mins: 55 Seconds: 34

Hi Sharon, I find that any kind of massage will help your anxiety. I went through a period of time when I was bothered by these anxiety attacks. The best thing to do is always remember that NOTHING harmful will come out of them. Nothing will happen to you. Take a minute to relax every muscle in your body, carry some herbal remedies such as Kalms or Quiet Life. These will calm you down immediately. My anxiety has completely disappeared now. Not smoking has really helped my situation in this. Keep quit, Sharon and you will beat these attacks along with your addiction. Good luck - I hope you feel much better soon. Best wishes, Deli My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 83 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,255 Amount Saved: 249 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 17 Mins: 36 Seconds: 55
