What I like best

Pen, I'm not saying that we can't, or shouldn't, argue such things. But when it gets to the point where people's feelings start getting hurt (not mine) and tempers start flaring, and people stop responding to certain people's threads and posts because their opinions differ, then it's gone past a friendly debate, and that's what I was trying to stop. Yes, of course debating is fun and can be useful up to a certain point. I just saw it going past that. Crave the Quit! What I like best about this site is that everybody's opinions are respected. While we might not always agree, and many times, we don't, the thing that I have always admired and respected most about this site has been the fact that we are all individuals of different cultures, races, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds, bound together to fight one of the greatest addictions that there is. We don't have to agree. We just have to respect each other's opinions and help each other when we need help. I've been around this site long enough to see many cyclical patterns. One of them is that the site seems to go through highs and lows where several people tend to have difficulty at the same time, and even lose sight of the goal of staying quit all at the same time. That is absolutely tragic, however another pattern, one that is far more devestating to a site like this (and thankfully doesn't happen very often) is that the site seems to get its panties in an uproar all at once and accusations get made and opinions fly like loose cannons and feelings inevitably get hurt. I've known some people to actually leave the site for good because of these times. Thankfully, they don't happen very often. This goes back to my very first point in this post, and that is that we are all here to do the same thing. Sure, we might have different ways of doing it... some choose to go Cold Turkey, while others choose to use aids. Some come to the site every single day, while others may only come once a week or once every few days. Some believe that we are addicts for life while others believe that the addiction is something that can be overcome with time. And yet still, some choose to test the limits of their strength to see how strong they really are while others choose a safer path. The point is that none of these are wrong. There's not a single right or wrong way to quit smoking, as long as we don't smoke. Everything else, and I do mean EVERYTHING else, is semantics. As my mother says, opinions are like @$$holes. Everyone's got one and they sure do stink! So while we can argue all day and night about the "right" way to quit smoking, let's not lose sight of the purpose of the site and that's to beat this addiction as a group. If we keep fighting, then w

Pam, I have no idea how I missed this before, but I'm glad it got posted to today so I finally saw it. Your comments and observations were very insightful. Eve, what you mentioned happens when a lot of people quit together. I think that is part of Penitent's concern about quit groups. Emotions run raw in the first few months of a quit, posts are misunderstood because physical cues are non-existent, meanings are misinterpreted, and tempers flare. Im going to admit I dont respect everyones opinion. I agree with Pams mother on opinions. Whether I agree with them, or not, doesnt matter. Ive respected many that I disagreed with, but there are some that are just wrong and thats my opinion. I agree 100% that quitting smoking often involves things not directly related to smoking. Certainly deaths, medical problems, and other traumatic experiences that threaten our quit should be discussed here. But what defines a traumatic experience? Which requests for help are justified and which are not? Who is qualified to determine where that line is for any other person? I know Im not. A threatened quit is a quit in danger, I dont care what the source of the upheaval is. Healer and Sunshine, I think you are targeting a specific person with your comments. Whoever it is (I dont care, names are moot), why is their quit so unimportant that they cant come here and ask for support? Right off the bat, I can think of three who could qualify as attention seeking based on the definition I think is being applied. So I could go off on a rant either in their defense, or against them. I'd be judged as either perfectly justified or evil personified, depending on whether the reader agrees with me or not. In fact, that rant could be classified as attention seeking in itself. So whether I defended or condemned the act, I would be guilty of it. Don't you just love hypocrisy, if thats what it is? BTW, I honestly dont get the part about stolen energy. Guess my energy level is high enough I dont notice a bit missing here or there. I've been very close to this board for over 13 months now. Like Pam, I've seen moods swing, tempers flare, people come, people go, and herd mentalities ebb and flow. One thing I've learned is that no

Pam, I agree in part with your post. However, doesn't it feel good once in a while to 'discuss' issues where your opinions and thoughts differ to those of other people? Surely we don't always have to agree? Yes...we are all working towards the same goal, but whatever happened to the good old fashioned debate?
