FB- You know, there are varying opinions on this....I guess I kind of look at my patch as the security blanket you describe. My husband, in his quit, did the same as you a couple of times. The first time he forgot his patch, he called me at 1 in the afternoon in a panic because he forgot to put on his 14 mg patch at 6 am-I had an extra in my purse I delivered to him. The second time he did not realize until that evening that he forgot his 14 mg patch again. The third time, he was on the 7 mg for just a couple of days, he decided to let the patch go and did fine. Keep one handy in case...and be careful! Good luck! I started out my quit with the patch. Once the fear was gone (2-3 weeks), I ripped the drug off. I found my quit to be much easier with the drug out of my body instead of in it. We are all different, so of course, do what works for you. Great quit you have going. Keep it up! Congrats! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Day two without the patch. Still carrying one around in my pocket though, kinda like in high school carrying around you know what just in case. LOL. Anyhow made it through bowling night with all the cigs and smoke being everywhere. Actually for the first time me being in the bowling alley without smoking is quite an experience in itself. Didn't realize the amoung of fog that hangs overhead. Anyone want to see actual second hand smoke firsthand, should go to the local bowling alley when the men's leagues bowl. Any rate, two days without the patch feeling pretty good. Felt like I had a mini depression episode yesterday. Seemed down and out. Ended up talking a 1/2 day vacation from work, going home and doing quite a bit of yardwork for about 4 hours. Relaxed a bit, took a nice shower, then went to my bowling night. Felt much better before going to bed. This morning things are a little brighter. Got up on Sunday, by the way marks two weeks, got cleaned up and dressed to go do my running around I had to do. Got everything done, got home helped my wife with dinner and the dishes. Finished up the kids homework with them. Put the kids to bed, my wife and I watched a movie. After all this, I go up to get ready for bed, take my shirt off to pull the patch of my back right shoulder, and to my surprise, I never put one on. The strange part is I did not feel any different yesterday than the days I had the patch on. Using the 14mg right now, and should be stepping down to the 7mg soon. Today, I came into work without wearing the patch, I did bring one with me just in case I get a real bad crave. All this just got me thinking that the patch I am sure cuts down on the cravings, but also knowing it's there is like a security blanket mentally. Yesterday I did not think about smoking, subconcsiously knowing that I had the patch on I couldn't smoke. So do I really need the patch for the cravings or for the mental habit. When I have more time I will search and read some old posts on the mental aspect. If you have any good ones please link them, sometimes I just don't get a lot of time on the computer. Freebird, I did that a few times myself while doing the patch. I left the house without it. I called my daughter to bring me one to work. I believe that the patch helps with cravings and part of it helps with the mental ascpect. That is what it is supposed to do. Give you some help with the cravings, and give you time to adjust mentally to not smoking. Even though I would forget to put it on sometimes or did not feel like I needed it anymore because that day went okay, I used the patches as directed and when the time came to get off of them it was no problem. In 2 days I will be 9 months smoke free. This was the first time I quit using the patches as directed and the longest I have ever gone without smoking. Keep up the great work you are doing. That's awesome, freebird. One more day and you'll be hitting that much talked about 3 day mark. At that point, you'll have to be careful putting a patch back on since you'll have the largest part of the nicotine out of your system (doubt I'd consider it at all at point). Glad things are going well for you :) Keep us posted My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 615 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,308 Amount Saved: $2195.55 Life Gained: Days: 65 Hrs: 3 Mins: 51 Seconds: 32

freebird, Did you start on 14mg and not the 21mg? Most patch programs at minimum are one month (I think). Mine was 12 weeks... started with 21mg and ending with the 7mg. Every individual is different so only you can decide what's best for you regarding cold turkey or patch. I'm more neutral in that I believe whatever keeps you from smoking... do it. We all eventually end up cold turkey anyway. That being said, here's my 2 cents worth. In the beginning, you decided the patch program should be your quit method. If you feel any loss of confidence at all, stay with your program. We simply don't need an extra emotion when we're trying to quit. :) No matter what method you stick with, those craves are going to come so just be prepared and let us know what you decide! Free, Good for you! Take some time to do some research on the site and take the advice you need :) Members have advised that they found going through the complete program essential. It helped with the process of stepping down :) Keep Strong, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
