Blaming the quit

Did all us quitting cause the price of fuel to go up since tax revenues can no longer be gained from tobbacco? Oh gosh it's our fault! ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 39 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 975 Amount Saved: $136.50 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 1 Mins: 39 Seconds: 23

Excellent post Butterfly and I also got a lot out of Lizzie's post>>>
This quitting thing is like a journey of discovery into the unknown world of our subconscious thoughts! We have to be honest with ourselves for once, no more lies or excuses. We have to face the addiction and look it in the eye. It's an incredibly powerful moment. After quitting smoking, a lot of us blame our quits for things that happen afterwards. And that's completely understandable. Afterall, quitting smoking often causes such things as excessive gas, irritability, insomnia, weight gain, feeling "spaced out" and being downright angry and mean. It's only natural that we will associate quitting with these things. However, I have seen many people, even people late in their quits, blame their quits for things that they do. This can be very dangerous. Blaming your quit can cause resentment towards your quit. When you smoked, did you have people in your life who you didn't smoke around? Maybe they didn't even know you smoked. So, you wouldn't smoke around them and as soon as you left, you couldn't reach for a cigarette fast enough, right? I remember being that way with my parents. And subconciously, I found reasons to not stay very long when I was there. I didn't even know that I was doing it until after I quit and starting seeing my parents a lot more often and for much longer spans of time. I secretely resented them for making me not smoke around them, even though they didn't really know that I smoked. I know that doesn't make much sense, but that's really what was going on. The same thing happens when we quit smoking if we constantly blame our quits for the things that happen. I have seen so many people blame their quits for their weight gain, only to go back to smoking and not lose a pound. Blaming our quits for symptoms of quitting often gives us a reason (excuse) to go back to smoking. Why give the junkie any ammunition? Yes, the quit may have caused the symptom, but resenting your quit and constantly blaming everything you say or do on your quit can be very damaging, not only to your quit but to your life in general! Look at each symptom of quitting as one step towards freedom from smoking. Each symptom is your body healing. Be proud and be thankful to be having these symptoms! I'm not saying you will always enjoy them... some of them are rather unpleasant... but be thankful that you are having them now, instead of continuing to smoke and remaining a slave to the addiction! Blaming your quit causes a lack of responsibility. When you quit smoking, inevitably, the mo

Thanks everyone. I think this post was just as much for me as it was everyone else here. I have had some anger issues the last couple of weeks, and yesterday, I caught myself thinking "I wonder if this is related to a specific time period in the quit" but then I quickly stopped myself and realized that I control my actions and my quit is not responsible for my anger... I am. So that's when I decided to write this post. I think everyone, new and old quitters, can identify with blaming the quit. Just wanted to share a little of what was going through my head yesterday. :) Crave the Quit! Very Good, Pam! The part about loving your quit - i think would be espeically beneficial to quite a few people... So many hold so much resentment towards it, and you know what? Society has taught us to be that way. Smokers walk around like billboards anouncing to the world they have some easy ticket to coping and happiness, and we're bombarded with the messge that to quit is to "give up..." and that we're doing without.. etc. etc. etc. It's not that way at all - every single one of us chose to quit smoking. There isn't a single perosn in here that has quit because theya re being forced to do it, or because they are being held captive until they quit, or something. Even if your doctor told you to do it - you didn't have to do it. You chose to quit smoking. This was your choice, so why are you missing smoking so darn much? I didn't fight to get away from my abusive ex husband and then get out and miss him. Cigarettes are abusive ex's.. let them stay gone for crying out loud. Watching someone you care about "slip" or "relapse" is like watching your best freind go back to the man that's been beating her up on a bi-weekly basis for the last 20 years. You all chose this path because you wanted it. Who's saying they don't now?
