What's your opinion on cigarette taxes?

17 years ago 0 327 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I think the biggest thing that the government should be trying to do is to limit the number of kids that get started smoking. I think they should not be allowed to display cigarettes or any advertisements anywhere - not in public or in stores or in magazines. Just shut down every mention of them except for the one that matters - they kill. I was also thinking that it would interesting if the only way a person could buy smokes would be to by a carton of them. I see this as a barrier to people like me who would buy a pack and throw them out and then buy another one the next day, etc. I think if I had to buy a whole carton I'd be less likely to do that. On the other hand, I might buy the whole carton and keep on smoking until they were all gone, I don't know. I also thought if cigarettes were only sold by the carton, then the barrier for kids to try them would be higher. However, most kids try them by getting them from some other kid's parents or their own parents so it might not help. Anyway, as to your question about the tax, I am all for a tax and I agree with you that all of the proceeds should go to prevention. Sorry for rambling, The QM My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 156 Amount Saved: $28 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 4 Mins: 11 Seconds: 32

Taxes on cigarettes in Canada are astronomical! However, it didn't seem to matter how much they cost, I just going out and buying them. It seems ridiculous that I would turn down a $30.00 item of clothing because I couldn't afford it and then spend more that $50.00 on a carton of cigarettes! The cost is not a deterrent for most smokers. If the government taxes cigarettes ALL dollars should go to smoking cessation programs and health care. In Canada, the government has become a little too dependent on these tax dollars (I think). In B.C. the Government is suing one of the Tobacco Companies for the cost of smoking related illnesses. That Company is closing down and moving all operations to Mexico. I bet you'll get lots of responses to this thread. Thanks for bringing up an interesting topic. I have had this debate with a smoker His view is he pays more tax than I do because of his smoking and therefore he is entitled to more health care!! He also says that the day the Government encourages people to smoke he will stop! Maintains that he could stop today if he wanted to IDIOT!!! I almost gave you his email address but I had better not! I am in favour of taxing smoking out of reach and always have been. This is not the new Phil speaking if they had been 50 pounds a packet years ago I would have had to stop. Problem is if the government does not get it via Old Nick(I think he is a cabinet minister) they will get it elsewhere. Heavy stuff this Phil My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/9/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 77 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,548 Amount Saved: 404.25 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 23 Mins: 27 Seconds: 19

The smoking cessation programs are good and needed. Unforntaly smoker and smoke related illeness cost something over 6 billion dollars a year. Not only health care but lost production cost from other companies. Some companies health insurance can't cover the smoker. Alot of smokers have no health ins. anyways. So who pays for that. That is why the cig tax is important. And should be raised to completly cover some of those cost. As well as help to quit. Grace

I don't think that teaching children about the dangers of smoking is enough. The reason I say this is that I KNEW about all of the dangers of smoking. I KNEW how much it cost and I KNEW how bad it smelled. What I didn't know was about addiction. I had NO idea that if I started smoking, I would get hooked and it would be damn near impossible for me to quit. I didn't know that my world would be turned upside down and that it would be hard for me to work, concentrate, sleep or even drive for a few weeks after quitting! THAT is what they need to teach kids! I think that most schools teach kids about the dangers of smoking but they DON'T teach them what it's like to have an addiction. Crave the Quit! In 2 weeks, in my state, the State of Missouri, voters will be voting on whether or not a new $.80 tax per pack of cigarettes should be implemented. The money will go to health care for uninsured persons, medicaid and up to 15% will go to smoking cessation programs. What's your opinion on this? Personally, I think that if they're going to tax smokers more, then ALL of the money should go to smoking cessation programs... not just 15%. I know that increased taxes never got me to quit. I did whatever I could to pay the extra money. But now that I'm on the other side, I'm thinking "why do I care how much smokers have to pay for their smokes? I don't have to pay it anymore!" I know that's hypocritical and harsh, but I'm honestly torn on this issue. On one hand, I remember how unfair I thought the taxes were before... but on the other hand, it's not really my problem anymore and all three of these ARE worthy causes. What do you guys think? Crave the Quit! Very good arguement Grace! However, I think that most of the money should go to help smokers quit. I think that the government often sees smokers as second-rate citizens who can quit if they really wanted to, but don't understand just how strong the addiction is! 15% is not nearly enough to effectively help people who desperately want to quit smoking. But I see your point about why health insurance costs are in there as well... smoking DOES have a huge impact on the economy. See, this is why I posted this... to get more than one perspective on it. Wonderful points by all! Keep it coming! Crave the Quit! Excellent point by Grace. A lot of insurance---mine for example---pays for rehabilitation costs if you are an alcoholic or drug addict, but will not pay for ANY smoking cessation aids or medications. There is NO support groups in my area. Of course, I live in the bible belt and our #1 cash crop is---you guessed it---tobacco! Prevention is key. Educating children at a young age. Support for smoking cessation.......... True, Phil. However, there are those that would smoke despite enormous taxes. You will also face bootlegging if cost goes beyond affordability. People determined and committed to smoking will continue no matter what. True, cost will deter some... As with ANY drug...early preventative measures and support for those wanting to quit is imperative. The desire to quit HAS to be there.
