The times...they are a changin'

High, going down memory lane. 15 years ago I worked in a dental clinic and we had ashtrays for patients in the waiting room and I used to smoke at the reception area and the coffee room. Isn't that horrible! Carry on the good work. Remember the best way to quit smoking is to quit..... Hi Rob, I agree with you, smoking is now so socially unacceptable. On the news the other day (in uk) they were talking of banning smoking on bus stops (outdoors). I remember the days when you could smoke on the top deck of double decker buses. I remember when I could smoke in the dining area at college. If you went somewhere you would assume you could smoke unless told otherwise. Nowadays you assume you CANT smoke, unless directed otherwise (or we see obvious signs like an ashtray or others smoking). I think it has got to the point where these days even smokers are embararressed of smoking. Which in terms of health, can probably only be a good thing. I dont know if our government really would like to abolish smoking, it makes way too much in revenues and tax. In January this year, I went to Prague, I bought 200 cigarettes (that I smoked in 5 days) - anyway I bought 200 lambert and butler for 13. Those cigarettes were made in the UK... yet they cost 45 to buy in the UK!! It is cheaper to get them made and shipped to Prague than it is to purchase them in your own country. Smoking is definately becoming an old fashioned and anti sociable habit. WHy dont they make it illegal? Because they (government) make too much money in tax from it, thats why! Isn't that true that the times are changing. I started in the 70s and yes, it was very acceptable. Everyone seemed to smoke, and teenagers, although it was illegal for us to buy them, no one paid a lick of attention to that. You could smoke anywhere and everywhere, and everyone did. Now, that being said, I am trying to think of that as the "bad old days" not the "good old days". Those are the days that got us so addicted and fond of smoking. I think that the changes are positive changes for future generations. Hey Rob ~ Looks like we're almost on the same page today - did you see my post " Second Hand News". No denying it's a positive change. One of the big reasons I posted this was that for those who are relapsing here on this site (I'm not being snotty, here...I realize how tough it is), what is the point? Pretty soon, you're going to have to quit. Maybe this climate will force drug companies to come up with something other than nicotine or antidepressants to help us. But I wouldn't count on the elusive "magic pill". Shevie- the class action suit against the FDA, (DEA ?) would be VERY INTERESTING, indeed! :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 129 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,180 Amount Saved: $1161 Life Gained: Days: 21 Hrs: 6 Mins: 38 Seconds: 45

With the new surgeon general's statement that no amount of second hand smoke is safe, it's not hard to predict the outcome for smokers. The current social climate has been the number one reason for me to quit smoking. I know there are a multitude of health reasons not to smoke, but like most junkies, those weren't on the top of my list. When a person's every emotion is entwined with a drug, "health" isn't really that big of a deal. I still romanticize about "the good old days" where I could maintain my level of nicotine level everywhere. I liked the 70's and 80's a lot. Not just for smoking; politically and socially, those days seemed a lot kinder. Maybe I was just younger. But....those days are gone, as are so many wonderful people in my life who I can't get back either. The point I'm trying to make here is that as much as I struggle with this addiction and the craves that come and go, there is no point in actually re-engaging the cigarette. That, more than anything, has kept me quit.I am ahead of the game here, as are we all, in that social barriers to smoking will only get much more stringent. More and more smokers will have no place to smoke and will HAVE to quit and go through this horrible thing we are going through now. Some businesses won't hire you and will fire you for smoking. It's only going to get more restrictive. While I think that it is hypocritical for governments to allow the production and distribution of cigarettes, A great outcome of this "passive-aggressive" approach will be that governments and health care providers are going to have to look very seriously at just how addictive nicotine is -and they will need to help a huge amount of people get help quitting. We can be glad that we have a solid head start! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 129 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,178 Amount Saved: $1161 Life Gained: Days: 21 Hrs: 6 Mins: 28 Seconds: 2

This just made me think of the fact that when I was of high-school age, they had a smoking section in the school. ~ To have a smoking section for kids. .................. Our society though has come a long way. We all take small steps to reach our goal, well so does society. But, there will always be those who fight for their addiction........ unfortunately, their choice also affects our health......... As these laws get tougher, keep in mind that they will never make cigs illegal............... So for that said, there will always be a place for smokers to smoke. As well as for the rebutal: there will always be those who fight to not breathe in smokers air..... ;) 4my2girls What Consumes Your Thoughts Controls Your Life My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 114 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,435 Amount Saved: $372.78 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 5 Mins: 11 Seconds: 25
We can be glad that we have a solid head start!
Yes Rob, we can!!! And yes, it might be nice to still live in a time when smoking was acceptable, but as you said... "The times... they are a changin'." By the way, if you figure out how to make time stop, let me know... I'm really trying hard to come up with a way so I don't turn 30 next year! :8o: :p Crave the Quit! Great post, Rob. I agree that our government's handling of the whole tobacco affair is very hypocritical. The unfortunate bottom line is "money talks". Perhaps a class action lawsuit against the FDA by all the citizens would be in order. (Geez, wouldn't that have the lawyers killing each other! :8o:) BTW, I've always liked that song. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 400 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,009 Amount Saved: $1520 Life Gained: Days: 74 Hrs: 15 Mins: 53 Seconds: 29
